Pretty much everything. Though this is just what I see.

If you're saying that the anime community is divided on everything, than you're just talking about people. People are different from each other, everyone has their own characteristics and ideas. It is impossible for people not to be divided.

True. What I meant is that some people are kind of rude and arrogant.

Well, yeah, some people are just assholes. I don't get why they do it, but that's just how they are

The community enjoys being divided. It's like sports, but with shipping wars.

You should see how some of the people behave on the MAL forum's, I've ran into some of the most toxic and immature people I've seen in the anime community over there. I could bring up some of my lovely experiences there with other users but Its not even worth it

I take it you aren't part of the gaming community. Honestly, when I started getting involved in the anime community, I was surprised how it seemed like people weren't all plotting to kill each other.

Yep. There are so many elitist and trolls in the gaming community. There's PC vs console, xbox vs PS, Japanese games vs western, multi player vs single player, cod vs BF and ETC.

It is too big.

Human beings collect into communities so they can be around people who are more similar to them than the general public, and away from people who are too different from them.

The optimal size of a community is about 250 to 300. Beyond that, you really have a collection of subcommunities, and once you have more than a half-dozen recogniseable subcommunities - i.e. around a thousand people - you just have the general public all over again. The number of different people is beyond anyone's ability to recognise, and the number of subcommunities is beyond the natural human capacity to "chunk" demographically.

It's actually a whole hell of a lot more focused and similar than the general public is, but the members are unable to meaningfully benefit from it. For example, there is nobody in this community who doesn't have SOME opinion on subtitle v. dub, which is a ready-made discussion where any group of us can discuss those opinions and not leave anyone out - because we ALL think SOMETHING about the question.

But what we really want is someone who thinks the SAME thing about the question. We want to be in a group of people where we all give the same answers to the important questions. And there are a few questions we all kind of agree are important: subtitles, fanservice, censorship, ecchi. We may not agree on the answers, but we mostly agree that they are important questions. And if you can answer "yes" or "no" or "don't care" on each of those questions, there's the subcommunity that agrees with you on everything... and then there are eighty others that don't.

This is simply beyond our ability to process. The anime community is NOT a community in any meaningful or useful way. It's so generic a description, it's irrelevant. When you participate in the anime community, you are effectively participating in the general public.

About what? It's not your fault that so many people like anime, it doesn't tell you anything useful about them anymore. It's basically like being in a community that watches movies. Not specific kinds of movies... just movies. "I like movies." Who couldn't say that? What human being on this planet can honestly say that they do not like any movie of any type?
