Seriously, stop making toxic threads. It's gotten to the point where I feel the need to tell people to stay away from GD because its a dumpster fire. A lot of us are tired of Trump Trump Hillary Hillary Race wars Religion all the time.

I miss the days of PV threads and the general lightheartedness of GD. Those threads actually provoked nice diacussion instead of flame wars.

I don't really see which of these threads are inherently toxic...
Could someone explain this to me?

What is this "lightheartedness" you speak of? GD knows only pointless controversy, needless clickbait, and grim and/or depressing news. There is no "fun" to be had here.

Yeah I don't mind discussing world events or politics as they are important and should be discussed but there is no discussion. Most of it is just accusation after accusation. Not to mention the sheer number of discussions started with false information that can be debunked with a quick google search or snopes.com.

The last thing I want is PV and general circlejerk stupidity threads. That's what chit chat is for, isn't it?

The threads with politics as their main focus have been lacking people who are interested in having a productive conversation. A productive conversation is one which point is not merely to insult people because they do not agree with one's point of view. Also, some people seem to think it is fun to provoke others. All in all, I find the lack of PrinceJudar and BlueOni disturbing. I always enjoyed reading some of the stuff they would post.

We could also say all the controversial threads are what extended discussions was for...The fact that that forum got merged with GD and essentially took charge of the tone and feel of the forum is what people find has caused things to go downhill. It's like taking in a homeless person, and then when that homeless person does something you don't like, and you complain about it, the homeless person is the one to say, "If you don't like it, leave."

I agree with this. Less activity by users who actually have something interesting to say is not a good sign for the health of this forum.

I pop in less frequently, I'll admit, but I have been around. It's nice to know my contributions are appreciated.

Part of the reason I've been less active in this particular section is because at this point in the US election cycle passions are running so high and people are already so firmly cemented in their positions that conversation probably isn't going to accomplish all that much, and another part of it is that some of the conversations people might like me to chime in on are transparently being started and perpetuated by trolls. I scarcely see the need to argue someone out of a position they've either transparently not reasoned themselves into to begin with or don't sincerely hold at all.

There should probably be some sort of political discussion forum, but yeah, it's election season and national and international salt levels are rising.

Flattered. I think a lot of users that are normally well researched and desire to have a back-and-forth conversation find ourselves very...demotivated in the face of this election cycle.

This election has little to do with positions/policy and much more to do with rhetoric--even more so than previous elections. Which is really saying something. Most people are simply going with their feels on this one--who they trust more--rather than on positions on controversial issues. You'll notice most of the topics are about character.

You're not seeing pro life/pro choice topics. You're not seeing tuition and/or economic threads. You're not seeing threads involving criticism of foreign policy.

You're seeing 'he did this', 'she said this', 'isolated incident' blah blah blah blah *insert speculation here*.

It's like keeping up with the fucking Kardashians. Maybe the general population is more interested in this sort of thing. I have more interest in ideas though, not people. This election cycle is like a battle between two celebrity figures--has little to do with fucking politics.

So I get on here and I tend to look for topics, but I typically just cringe and walk away right now. I really don't care to speculate and play these games. I demonstrate a very obvious disinterest in this election. I think that's what other users similar are somewhat experiencing.

You can't delete or lock a thread unless it breaks the rules, otherwise you're basically a keyboard tyrant.

Between all the political threads and the nonsensical ones a certain group of users (one in particular) post, the quality content in general discussion really has taken a huge dip. Hopefully the end of election season will rectify the situation somewhat.
