During the French Revolution, you could get your head chopped off on the guillotine or otherwise killed for:

Using the wrong form of address, e.g. madam

Utter anything remotely considered bourgeois

Wearing wrong clothes

Not supporting the Revolution

Not enthusiastically cheering the Revolution

Not enthusiastically cheering the Revolution enough

Suspected collaboration with Royalists

Suspected collaboration with any foreign power on anything

Saying anything remotely nice about any Royal, living or executed

Having any association with Royals or Royalists, even if you've "done nothing"

Having any Royal blood, doesn't matter if you're a woman or child

Expressing any pity for Royals, living or dead

Expressing any reservations regarding mass killings

Complaining about lack of food

Complaining about the bread

Disagreeing about any policy of the Revolutionary leaders (Revolutionary leaders not excluded from execution)

Being member of clergy or associates of clergy (if you think religion is the source of all problems then congratulations- you're thinking like a French revolutionary!)

Being reported by your neighbor for any of the above, at which time you'd be given a very short trial before being put to the gallows

At least you will warm your heart in hell knowing that your neighbors are next.

Only this much? Bah, Amateurs! I'd also execute anyone who supported the Revolution TOO much. Someone laying it on THAT thick is obviously trying to hide something, and is therefore a Royalist sympathizer, a foreign spy, and an Austrian all at the same time. Off with their heads!

Fun fact, did you know that they used to make toy guillotines that kids (or anyone, I suppose) could use to chop off the heads of dolls, rodents, and probably fingers?

That sounds very much like the Russian Revolution, where the killed all of the royalty, and then the Bolshevik Revolution.... where they did all of the stuff on that list....

The period called "The Terror" was just that- The revolutionary regime was actively terrorizing the populace of Paris. It was terrorism but was really unneeded and tragic waste of human life.

I just looked it up, and it appears that some toy guillotines were used as vegetable choppers as well.

I wanted to chuckle but somehow couldn't.
