I'll second the Looney Tunes, and throw in a 30's Fleischer Popeye

Or anything Tex Avery did when he was still at Warner, before he did his crazy MGM stuff:

For years, I'd championed the Flintstones as one of the Three Smartest Written Sitcoms of the 60's--
But recently looking up the "lost" Quick Draw McGraw cartoons on the Internet ether (music rights are keeping them off disk), I've become more aware of ex-Chuck Jones writer Michael Maltese bringing his style to early pre-1962 Hanna-Barbera, and am now in awe of the literate and subversive genius of "Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy". (This is no way meant to be ironic.)

Yes: Older Cartoon Network fans, remember how obsessive and dedicated the network was for three years to teach you to appreciate that anything Hanna-Barbera made before "Dexter's Laboratory" was the Devil, and must be subjected to passively-hostile shame and ridicule for Cool Culture's own good, so that you would gratefully support their expunging them off the channel?

Watch any cartoons in the 90s really. It was like majority of them had mature jokes.

Gravity Falls, Looney Toons, Spongebob only in the first 3-4 seasons, anything before the 2000s...

Well, they had self-nudging in-jokes about the LA entertainment industry written by grownup screenwriters who thought "cartoons" let you throw anything at the wall that stuck, but I wouldn't call that "mature"...
