I have had trouble with the Crunchyroll video player for almost my entire experience with this site (been a member since 2007), even across different computers; but only recently has it gotten too bad to handle. I can't even play 480p videos without it freezing now. It's even crashed my computer a few times! (I can play high quality files perfectly fine using VLC and MPC-HC... funny how I could probably play a video ripped from this site using other programs but couldn't play that same file using the Crunchyroll Video Player.)

You guys seriously need to fix your video player, I've had an annual subscription since February of last year, but I don't think I'll be renewing this time around.

I'm currently on Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

I use Firefox (49.0.2) for my browser. I use Disconnect and uBlock Origin for addons. (I have tried disabling them before)

Here's my DirectX Diagnostic: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2dg115a3d1g6hmd/DxDiag.txt?dl=0

I have also tried disabling hardware acceleration.

The web site video player has been broken for quite a while. It's terrible really. The solutions are to watch Crunchyroll from other platforms. Here are the ones I've tried:

Roku 3: hands down the best way to stream from Crunchyroll. The video looks great and the App fires up 95% of the time. Rarely have downtime.

Windows 10 App: Good is you're using Windows. It's better than trying to stream off CR's main site via a web browser.

iOS on an iPad 4: Excellent UI and almost flawless streaming. Highly recommend if you have an iPad.

My advice: pick up a Roku 3 and an inexpensive flat screen TV. You can get a decent flat screen for the price of a Starbucks cup of coffee these days.

Tech: My router is only a year old (NetGear Nigthawk X6) and my Internet connection is stellar (Comcast, 150 Mbit/s down, 10 Mbit/s up). Lag is never an issue with me.

Good luck.

Oh wow I had not considered that I could use the App! This might be my fix. Thanks!

edit: It's actually worse =P. It won't play in anything other than what looks like 240p-360p, it's not like my internet is bad either: http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/5748606191

Dang, that's too bad. Worked great for me when I messed with it. Maybe it changed recently. I'll experiment with it tomorrow.

You might give the namebench diagnostic tool a try: https://code.google.com/archive/p/namebench/downloads . That can sometimes make a difference... Even if your stream is fast, if the path it takes is bad, you'll get bad performance. Which of CR's CDN servers you get will respond from the location "closest" to your DNS server, which is not necessarily the location that is most local to you.

Running namebench will not change anything on your system itself, it will just tell you whether your current DNS is the best one to be using (and secondary/tertiary backups). If it's not, then your router is the best place to go to make the suggested changes, since that affects all devices in your network, but it is possible to just change your PC settings instead.

If you do make changes, then you need to bounce whichever hardware you configured to release the DNS cache to see if it made any actual difference.

Namebench will take quite a long time to run, with minimal feedback to tell you how far along it is, then finally it will pop up a page in your default browser with suggested changes. It won't always make a difference, but if you have some time to try, it can't hurt, and it could help.

So I ran namebench earlier and it says that my DNS route is "fastest".

I am very suspicious of my current router though, while looking through forums I've found some complaints about it. It's the Hitron CGN3ACSMR. I've also had some trouble streaming at high quality on Twitch.tv recently.

I don't think those are related to the kinds of things that happen to me while streaming on crunchyroll.com.
Stuff like:
-The video freezing but the audio continuing
-Choppy playback
-Taking a long time to jump to x:xx
-Video won't start
-Green artifacts
Again I find it odd that I can play these kinds of videos on programs like VLC and MPC-HC; I think it must be something involving either the browser (Firefox) or Flash.

Just for grins, try streaming a video in the player and shut off the subtitles right away by right-clicking in the window and choosing "no subtitles" and then see whether it still stutters afterwards.

Also, you might try using the chrome HLS plugin that beardfist cobbled together to see if that makes a difference playing. The HLS stream has embedded subs rather than soft ones that have to be coordinated in the flash player...

Given the experience atreyu119 reported with the Windows 10 app (which I expect also uses the HLS streams), I am pessimistic about the likely result.

From watching ~10 mins of video on Firefox with subs off, it seems to have helped a lot (no freezing yet, jumping to timestamps is now quicker than before.)

I can immediately see the difference in performance after switching to Chrome though (which is problematic because I really don't want to use Chrome...). I don't seem to need the HLS plugin.

I'll edit my post if I start to come across issues, gonna try to stream some more.

So I tried disabling my add-ons again and I've found that by disabling UBlock Origins I am now able to run 720p video(subbed) without problems, but 1080p still remains an issue (Flash immediately crashed when I tried). This might be a multi-faceted problem, but I'm content with 720p so let's just say that my problem has been solved =)

Thanks for the help everyone.

If your computer crashes just because you're playing video, I think you may have a problem with your computer. We don't know how old your computer is.

Also, there's a difference between streaming a video and playing a video offline.

I am having issues with the player (I think it's the player, and not my browser/computer) also. This is the most severe issue I've had since I've been a part of the site. It freezes, then the watermark you see at the beginning of the video shows up on top of the point where the video froze. I can't even watch a 3 minute video in one shot.

Same. I never had any problem with CR before but nowadays I've been having a frustrating experience with the player. I'm not sure what's going all of a sudden but it's becoming kinda impossible for me to watch without it lagging or becoming choppy or simply just freezes. Especially when I'm watching Yuri on Ice *throws a tantrum* I've tried every solution and every browser. My internet connection is strong and nothing is wrong with my laptop because I can play the same videos on my VLC and everything is smooth and I can watch online any video without any problem. God, this is so annoying

The player is very annoying, when it takes 20 minutes to watch a 4 min show. I am going to switch over to watching on Funimation for a while. At least Fairytale didn't keep freezing up. I know it is probably the buffering that is the problem, or at least that is what shows going on on my android tablet. If CR doesn't or can't get the player fixed and running right. Will be thinking about canceling my subscription and just going with Funi.
