AICHI —
Police in Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture, have arrested the driver of a truck after he hit and killed a 9-year-old boy on Wednesday afternoon. The driver, Nobusuke Kawai, 36, has admitted he was playing Pokemon Go and did not see the boy.

According to police, the incident occurred at around 4:10 p.m. as the boy, Keita Noritake, was on his way home from school, Fuji TV reported.

The driver, Nobusuke Kawai, 36, was arrested at the scene and charged with dangerous driving resulting in death.

Kawai was quoted by police as saying he was playing Pokemon Go at the time, and was not aware of Noritake crossing the road. He also admitted that he frequently had his smartphone on the seat and played Pokemon Go while driving.

The accident took place at an intersection with no traffic lights.

Well the boy was ghastly injured, and I'm pretty sure his ghost will haunter him from now on.

Unlss he can catch ghosts with the Pogo app, I doubt it.

Anyways, may his soul rest in peace, unless he's a gengar, gengars have no souls.

another distracted driving accident by Pokemon Go

there's no law against using the phone while driving ?

there's already one around here.. the driver will have to pay for his negligence

a few years in prison might be necessary.. unless the boy's family will just let the driver go without wanting to press any charges

Phones should just automatically turn off when they sense movement even for passengers. If you need to use your phone pull over.

In the UK there is a law against using phones whilst driving. People get around that by using hands free devices to talk. One 18 year old ended up killing an old man because she was texting when driving.

If there's no present law in Japan that covers using phones whilst driving then it's best they sort that out.

They drive crazy in Japan. I'm surprised he stopped to see what he ran over.

There doesn't need to be a law against using the phone while driving. There are obviously already laws that cover the situation, because he was charged with "dangerous driving resulting in death". Had he been caught using the phone before hitting the child, he probably could have been charged with "dangerous driving". It is asinine to make a special law for using your phone while driving while there are already laws on the books to cover it. They did the same stupid thing here in the US.

Edit:
By the way, a lot of people in the US still use their phones while driving despite there being a specific law for it. Adding in an extra and redundant law for it doesn't act as any further deterrent.

The law in the UK for driving with a mobile phone is just a fine-based system intended to discourage use of hand-held phones while driving. There are other driving laws that are violated by using a phone at the wheel, but it is much simpler to prosecute if you have a clear cut law. The next level up is "driving without due care and attention" but you would have to collect a lot more evidence and it would be up to a judge to balance the circumstances. With the phone law it is a simple case of, "Were you driving while using a phone?" and an answer of, "Yes" producing an automatic fine and a penalty on a points system that eventually removes your driving licence (if you commit enough driving offences).

In terms of causing a death on the road the UK would also charge the driver with "Causing death by dangerous (or careless) driving," which could result in a prison sentence.

I suppose that will solve the problem of people annoying others on the train with their phone or not paying attention to their surroundings as they cross the street.

Yes, and I know people will hate it that they can't use their phone when they want, but I think protecting others from people using their phone while driving or people walking into the road while using their phone in the middle of traffic, etc. is a better solution. Say you make a call before you move, the call would hang up if you moved too much, but if you are playing music before you move once you move the screen will turn off and the background music will keep playing. This would kill Pokemon Go application, but I say kill the application before more retards kill themselves or others trying to get virtual points that won't do anything.
