The first part was fine, but the second season made me super mad at what a waste it was. Kirito ruins the entire thing by being bland and over-powered, while Asuna feels like Waifu-bait more than an actual character. Sinon was a step up, but still not as good as she should be for a series so popular.
The treatment of it's characters is overall a show ruiner, and with what most agree to be am awesome premise, it makes it even worse.

I don't like the show. The first 10 episodes were ok and the idea of permanent death was interesting. The problem came after the whole Yui deal, death lost all of its weight. The show lost the best thing about it. To me, that was when the show went from OK to bad.

Sword Art Online was my first anime and while I has strange taste in TV when I was younger, I found it enjoyable. I liked the idea and more of the characters were endearing and likable enough.

the first season is great. However the second season is very subpar compared to the first.

I find it to be a good anime since it has a good story and I enjoyed it. In terms of it being a harem anime, I think it's one of the good ones I've seen cause it stuck to the story it was advertising and didn't deteriorate into a stupid harem fanservice cliche like many other harems out there.

Well considering I am going to see the new movie....it's alright. It has decent music, enjoyable battles to watch, interesting worlds, but at the same time basically no character development, Kirito is so overpowered it becomes very predictable and the pacing is rushed.

I guess I enjoy it enough to watch it, but it definitely isn't a masterpiece, nor an anime I'd even put in my top 20.
I think what I enjoy most about it is the technology in the show's world which in turn gives us some insight in what the future might have in store for us.

Maybe not the worst anime, but I've seen better. Too bad SAO has that art-style that I really hate.

Terrible writing, decent characters go out the window, negligence towards a basic understanding of the mechanics/appeal of video games, and more!

Good, in the sense that it's immensely popular and is reasonably entertaining. Bad, regarding little knowledge of actual game mechanics, significant plot holes, and the "Jesus-kun" phenomenon.

I wonder if Kawahara ever played an MMO. Everything after SAO is nonsensical in terms of game mechanics and gamer culture.

-The politics of Alfheim Online, for one. We see a minor antagonist like Sigurd being visibly angry over Kirito and Leafa leaving, and I got to ask, "Fucking why? It is a fucking game at this point. The steep EXP loss means nothing compared to actually dying". This is a stem of some virtual racism, which makes it even more stupid as to the design of having races fight it out depending on not where there allegiance lies, but being forced because of their race. First of all, does no one attempt cross race relationships? Second, why? There is no guarantee that one race wouldn't triumph on the basis of having more players just being interested in an aesthetic choice or certain skill, and this is a bad design overall when you are dividing people into groups that MUST be enemies. It does not end there, when Kirito expressively goes to stop a traitorous deal going on, for no reason, other than for them to have his back later on infiltrating a tree. Though two questions. In the anime, Kirito makes no mention of the tree after saving them, nor does it appear that he asked for their help off screen, all for the purpose of making it a surprise Calvary moment. In this case, there is not even that many people out there helping him. Are the races just that small, or are the power difference so great between people?

-Fucking Sachi. Kirito is obviously distressed over her death, is distressed when Heathcliff apparently kills Asuna (Despite the fact that Heathcliff only spawned her in another place, despite having a death animation. In which case, why is Heathcliff being a dick?) and attacks all his fury. Yet they end on a note that Kirito has some respect for Kayaba's intelligence, not to mention his psychotic desire which ends in 3000+ players dead, with Sachi being one of them. This is also expressed in the fight against Sughou, which Kirito parts on good terms. Fucking why? Who cares about his intelligence? He is responsible for the deaths of thousands. The fact that Kirito took the egg that is used to create other worlds with no visible feelings on the last encounter

-Why did Heathcliff fucking cheat in the first match against Kirito? This is a major plotpoint where Kirito discovers that heathcliff did cheat using mod powers, instead of, you know, him being reasonably bested, in what is a non lethal match. The original purpose was to fight whether or not Asuna will stay. Two problems. Why does Heathcliff care? Was it a ploy to get Kirito to join? I mean, his girlfriend is in the guild, there are probably many ways to go about out, such as sending an invite. Does he care that much about a powerful warrior as Asuna? Come on, Blood Knights are filled with Frontliners, and the fact that we are not letting Asuna decide is fucking bullshit. What kind of guild forbade members from leaving?

-Kirito having dual sword skills, the only person who is capable due to game coding, whilst the other 9 or so special skills are never mentioned. (Despite Klein being a prime candidate for what happens later). This betrays the teamwork of an MMO on the basis of having a player, out of thousands, being the "chosen one". In games with MMOs, the fact that Kirito is the only major characer besides Asuna and Heathcliff is insulting.

-Asuna being married off to Sughou. This is Asuna's mother's fault, on the basis that she wanted to elevate her lower class status and did so by marrying a successful business man. So in return, she hopes Asuna will be successful and higher class by...marrying her off. Fucking what? First off, why? Asuna is not even out of High School, and you are already fucking wealthy at the time. I mean, if you want her to be successful, why not college? She certainly is more than capable. Is not what mothers want for their children what they could not do themselves? I mean, Asuna's Mom doesn't sound like she married him out of "choice", but why would this extends to Asuna? On top of the creepy ass lack of consent that Asuna clearly detests, and the whole father's colleague thing. Just why?

-Wielding a sword in a gun game, and no one else can deflect bullets like he can, and that he was the first person to discover this. Fucking why? There are so many tryhard players in videogames looking for a challenge, yet they do not even go as far as to use a sword against armed opponents? First of all, why did no one who tried been successful to replicate it? If anyone ever played an FPS, this is one of the ways that top players usually challenge themselves; in some cases, there are characters you can play that only have melee (Reinhardt from Overwatch) . It surpasses the rule of cool at this point, it just a big ball of cheesy pandering.

-ASADA SAN ASADA SAN! Yet another rapist, for no fucking reason other than to use rape as a drama.

-Kirito turns the tables against Sughou...and so much more. It is easy to treat nice people with respect, but it is much harder when a character is faced with an asshole, a depraved criminal, etc. In any case, Kirito is reasonably upset because Sugho defeat Kirito using his GM powers and proceed to rape Asuna in the game. Kayaba shows off, give Kirito's GM priveleges while removing Sughou's, and leave them to their own devices, which ends in a duel where Kirito noticeable does several limb slicing injuries to Sughou, including impaling his eye, after turning the pain index to the maximum, which has the effect of causing Sughou to go blind.

The most disgusting thing about this is, that asshole fanboys state that Kirito gave him a fair chance by using Excalibur. No, no he did not. This was an act of mockery where Kirito knew that Sughou would be unable to defend himself (Otherwise, why risk Asuna?), and took several devastating and painful injuries against him. This is an act of torture, and one of considerable brutality at that. First off, besides the rape and kidnapping of 300 people, Kayaba's so much worst in death tolls, yet Kayaba was a complete karma houdini on the basis of being a respectable academic. Second of all, this wasn't torture to get information, but revenge. It glosses over it as a heroic moment, the same whereas later Kirito avoids killing Sughou in real life. First off, there is no point, this is just cruelty we would expect from an asshole like Sughou, not a protagonist. Torture for information is bad enough, then there is torture as a punishment, something I wholly disagree with.

It's both good and bad as the arcs vary greatly. SAO is amazing, ALO is trash, GGO is alright, Excalibur is forgettable, and Mother's Rosario is great, and from what I'm hearing Ordinal Scale is as good as it gets since the SAO arc ended.
