When I saw all those trimmings I thought you were going to glue them all on to the sides of the candles

I suggest that you fill in the rim as much as possible, like a mosaic, possibly with smaller stones or something else between the larger pieces. If you want cream color on the rim, light-colored materials would do. Same could work to fill in the spaces amongst the shells. Instead of having the candles on bare plate, I also recommend some kind of base for the candles.

I'm also a little concerned that not allowing the shells to touch each other lends the piece an almost too sterile vibe for a beach theme.

maybe I could lightly sprinkle sand between the cracks??

The concept is great but I think more color is needed to make it livelier.

Nevertheless, your gesture is simply cute and thoughtful, I hope your mom will like it.

P.S. Don't worry, I like to be excited for holidays even if it's still months or days from now lol

I think that'd be a nice touch.
