Don't currently own a car, but my parents were always fond of Lexus/Toyota.

Anyone have any recs for a good electric, perhaps hybrid vehicle? I've been looking at the Chevrolet Volt and Spark EV, since I'm near a Chevrolet dealer and have had a chance to test drive those, but I'm curious about other brands.

Don't go into debt paying over $40,000+ for a hybrid vehicle unless you have the money for it. It's a huge rip-off. Car Manufacturers use your feeling of wanting to go green to stick a huge price tag on their vehicles because they know people will want them.

I wouldn't spend that much, even before a tax rebate, so I'm not too worried about it. I know there are a lot of issues with green cars still, but I live in an area with a lot of public charging stations and EV lanes in traffic. Worth it, for what I want a car for. And thanks, @ANN and paul, I will look more into Prius! I think there is a Toyoto dealer near my husband's school, so I may go check that out.

Subaru and Mazda are also reliable Japanese brands but not many people know about them

You don't live in the frozen north, do you.

Seems like almost everyone up here has a Subaru. Sure, they don't get as good gas mileage on average as some other manufacturers, but AWD is standard (almost) across the entire line, and many of them are balanced well for cornering. Add the best (or near best) crash-test ratings in the industry and you have a very good vehicle for winter driving.

Amusingly "domestic" and "import" don't mean as much as they used to. My Subaru Legacy, for example, is around 70% (or more) made in the United States as I recall. Which is higher than most Ford models.

that's the common misconception about Subaru .. given most of their cars are AWD..

you don't need to live in the frozen north to own a Subaru

AWD has many benefits-- the main downside is the MPG drop

if you have a lot of rain in your are.. driving on slippery road .. having a car with AWD is a lot safer

true.. domestic vs import line is getting more blurry now a day

but there are those that will define it as a car brand by an American company of sort around here

i don't care much either way.. just want to own a reliable car that can last 10+ years for me

I'll pretty much only drive American, don't know why. My first vehicle was an old Chevrolet Colorado truck, my second was a RAM 1500, and my current is a Chevrolet Camaro. I've had nothing but joy with those vehicles!

Guess I'm a Honda guy. I love my Honda Civic. Yeah, people talk crap about them because people do ghetto mods to them all the time, but they are reliable cars, cheap and aren't ugly like the new Toyota Corollas

I basically have the biggest beef with Ford. I can't stand their vehicles and every single one I've heard of friends or family owning has been absolute crap. Not too fond of other American brands either frankly, but that might be in part by the fact that my parents have been buying Toyotas for years now and the last non-Toyota we had was my shitty Chevy Malibu that I got from a used car lot when I was pretty close to the start of driving and I dumped so much money into that piece of shit that I never want to look back from my adorable Yaris.

Yeah I hear you. We Americans(plus our Canuck brothers to the North) make decent trucks and SUVs, but until recently reliability with sedans has been, well quite awful. My parents also stopped buying American cars for the same reason, too many damn breakdowns and problems happening way before they should. Any Toyota or Honda is going to last you a solid 15 to 20 years if you take good care of it. The only American car we have is a '93 Suburban, and damn that thing has lasted forever, but like a said trucks are the one thing we do right.

I tend to disagree that this is always correct. For the average driver, I hybrid is simply a waste of money. However, my parents both drive 30-40 miles each way to work and pass off the car since they work opposite hours so they are saving enough gas money that in their case it is worth it. However, if you aren't driving a minimum of 20-25k+ miles minimum per year, then yes I would tend to agree with you since you will never save enough gas money to make up the price difference versus a traditional car.

I love that you brought up the car scene in Crunchyroll haha!

I just recently purchased a 2013 Audi S5...I guess that shows where my allegiance lies. Generally, I prefer German luxury sport over everything else: Audi is my favorite due to the design and style. I've also taken a liking to Mercedes as of late. The Japanese brands are cool too...if anything I don't like domestics. The only domestic car that I'd truly want is the Corvette Stingray.
