When I was in high school I did volunteer work via Red Cross at a USPHS Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Rather than directly assist nurses or docs I worked with a man who had a degree in Photography and did photo work for the docs, took ID photos, developed doctors' records of operating room scenarios. It was a neat job. I learned how to do manual photo development in the darkroom using Kodak chemicals plus other roles. Jerry was a great boss. We would talk about stuff beyond work. The darkroom had great equipment. Jerry would give me 35mm rolls of Kodak color slide film to go and shoot as I pleased off-duty. I put in 400 hours the summer I worked there. I had the 2nd highest volunteer hours of any student that season. I did it because I loved the work. He was also 1 of the best bosses I ever worked for.

Toys R Us seasonal overnight stock crew.

Unloaded a truck every day (~1100 boxes per truck), then put every single box from the truck out on the shelves. It was honestly rough for me, because I had no work experience, and thus no work ethic. It was hard to get moving fast enough, but thinking about all the boys and girls that needed a good Christmas kept me motivated.

Plus, they kept the radio on during work, so I got to sing Christmas carols as I worked and drive everyone mad with my Christmas cheer.

Restaurant work. I was a busser/setter. It was at a Pappa's. Management was shit, the waiters were drinking in front of customers when there was supposed to be a no tolerance policy, and I was designated the eternal work horse. Not because I was new. I was basically seen as the guy who was always the new guy. So pretty shit. Waiters would not pick up the pace so that I could set tables quick enough, and I was treated like I was at fault despite me being told not to pick up specific items myself. So yeah, don't work in the restaurant business unless you feel like playing dirty with a very bad management.

I was ready to basically threaten a race card and a disability card to teach them a lesson about what they assume. By threaten, I mean tell them that I know how to pull their reputation down under through being a cry baby. Just to see what kind of people ran it. And to no surprise, they shat their pants. The general manager was clearly a special snowflake Feminist who's afraid of angering any kind of minority or someone with even a hint of autism or some shit.

Me? I was just intending to quit. But I wanted to see what kind of people they were first.
