HitchBOT, the hitchhiking robot which successfully hitched around Europe and Canada, was brutally destroyed while hitching in the US of A.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/03/us/hitchbot-robot-beheaded-philadelphia-feat/

HitchBOT, the cheerful hitchhiking robot that had made cross-country trips across Canada, the Netherlands and Germany, had intended to travel across the United States as well. Instead, it survived all of 300 miles on the mean streets of the U.S.A.
Two weeks after beginning its U.S. trip in Boston, the robot was vandalized in Philadelphia, the team overseeing the robot said in a statement.
"HitchBOT's trip came to an end last night in Philadelphia after having spent a little over two weeks hitchhiking and visiting sites in Boston, Salem, Gloucester, Marblehead, and New York City," the hitchBOT "family" said on its website. "Unfortunately, hitchBOT was vandalized overnight in Philadelphia; sometimes bad things happen to good robots."

(Tech experiment or social experiment?)

In my personal experience, people in Netherlands are all very friendly, to people at least.

But I still like America. That dumb bot deserved it.

America, ____ yeah!

Not surprising. Quite a few people online have commented about wanting to do that for the "lols" when folks brought up the possibility of it being wrecked in the USA came up.

(insert distasteful joke about robot-murdering serial killer here)

That just goes to prove that hitch hiking is a dangerous way to get around. You never know who you're gonna come across...

The story makes me wonder if it would make it any further on the West Coast instead

Something tells me "no"

I'm glad it made it out of Boston though. At least I 'm spared feeling guilt by too close regional association.
