East Oakland
East Los Angeles
South San Francisco

Why do a whole bunch of these east and south sides of town end up being the shitty neck of the woods?

Is it because people always spit out the train windows when going up north and messing up the wrong side of the tracks or what

Because on the west side of LA and Oakland, there's water, and the problem children are afraid of water.

I think the south side my town (not San Fran) is crappy too but it isn't closer or farther to the water.......

The south side of the city in which I live is considered the worst part of the city. Near one highway, the section people think of as 'the south side', there are a couple casinos, a reservation, and a lot of stores where it's questionable if they're going to speak English. Near the other highway, it's a state prison and a lot of construction companies. And also the Air Force.

Curiously enough from what I read it seems to have something to do with prevailing winds. Whichever way the wind blew is where the poor people lived because the rich didn't want to be downwind of the smoke, soot, urine, open sewers and general human misery that were the byproduct of industrial advancement. Since the prevailing winds are westerly in the northern hemisphere the poor people got shunted off downwind.

So the older the city is, the more likely it is that the east/south side is the shitty side.

The North side of my town is the not so great side of town. We have expanded southward and eastward.

West side of my town, while not a true ghetto area, I wouldn't dare walk around alone after 10pm or so, so I guess that breaks that pattern.

In my hometown which is listed as one of the top 100 dangerous cities in the U.S., the East side is very peaceful while the West side is a hellhole for crime.

The two places I've lived in the past twenty plus years seem to have the high crime areas in the North end of town....
Although, the city I live in now used to be notorious for generally high crime rates...
Now Tacoma, WA seems to be the place to be if you want your car to be broken into and you stuff stolen. We lead the state in that....
