Haha.. well, semi-quick version in my opinion: EL wire's better if you want long, continuous light, or need to sew it into clothing or something (think Tron suits, or the edges of glowing wings). LEDs are brighter, so they're more visible in indoor lighting, but the more you diffuse them to get the continuous light look like for a lightsaber blade, the dimmer they get.. then you're back to EL wire brightness unless you are willing to solder up hundreds and hundreds of them, and you generally need stiffer mounting points, like within solid props rather than cloth. But there's tons of details and considerations that nearly no one cares about (as is the case with lots of topics that someone might be interested in)..

..so if you find someone who does enjoy chatting up the same stuff you do (like that), it's a good idea to keep them in mind for someone to hang out with - or possibly ask out, in my opinion. You know you'll have something fun to talk about, at least!

Wait, you mean you don't need gains or you don't need the person you're asking?
You only need gains

I imagine it goes something like:

You go up to this broad, see, with the gams like Christmas hams and the cans like Mother's blue prize gardening, see, and you give her the eye, see, that tells her that you're a man of the world, see, and you've seen things, see, and then, see, you smash her right in the kisser to establish your masculinity.

Start a conversation on some shared interest - like robots, or the various advantages/disadvantages of EL wire vs LEDs for costumes.

By the time that's over, either a) they've long since gotten bored and left and would've said no if you'd asked them out most likely or b) you've probably had dinner together, fought to get the check from the wait staff before they can (staff bribery works well here, and it's a lot of fun), and you're now talking about where to go next time to continue the discussion.

ETA - should probably point out that this is more a way of making a new friend, not directly asking someone out, but I only date friends, so... first step for sure.

Is this like, the Wayne's World theory?

Garth Algar: Uhm, Wayne? What do you do if every time you see this one incredible woman, you think you're gonna hurl?

Wayne Campbell: I say hurl. If you blow chunks and she comes back, she's yours. But if you spew and she bolts, then it was never meant to be.

Ask them if they want to check out a puppy in your parents basement, and then mention something about a mustache ride or something.

At least that's what my dad taught me. Hasn't worked for me yet, but I must be doing it wrong. Maybe I'm forgetting something.

Well I wouldn't know because I'm a girl lol

But probably goes and starts with a simple yet smooth greeting... "Hey."

"Will you go on a date with me?"

Usually works.

Hmm, honestly don't know. I haven't gone on any official "dates" with someone I wasn't yet dating unless it was initiated by the girl, which made my life rather simple

In all seriousness, I don't know. I don't really ask anyone out on a date, but rather make plans to hang out with them and if romance develops over time (usually 2-3 months) confess and ask her to be my girlfriend. Maybe its because I live in boring Suburbia where 20 somethings are either already married or fleeing to the much more exciting city or that is how everyone in my family who got married went about things.

In the words of Trump: "Wrong." What's all this business about being honest and upfront about it? If fictional television and movies have taught me anything, it's that you have to be as ambiguous and over-the-top about it as you can be. In the end, the other party should be wondering if you really asked them out or not.

Take a frisbee, write on it "Will you be my Frisbae?" and then pass it to them.
