I thought it was an okay time.

But I really had no idea how the presidency was.

I don't think people here do, either.

[Please read at least four paragraph blocks in the following link before responding. That's only 15% of the article... I don't think it's too much to ask even in this age of zero attention span]

Compared to Reagan, Trump is genius.

Only his speeches and the second hand account of what people thought of him. Plus the Star Wars program.

I thought he actually knew what he was doing, especially in his dealings with Gorbachev and other world leaders... Turns out the truth was the opposite.

Some people have been unemployed more than a year in the recent recession. Some just gave up and ended up outside of the statistics. I know there have been some people already unemployed for nearly a year in the latest round of Silicon Valley tech layoffs that began early this year.

That would be giving him too much credit.

He was an actor.

Depending on what one thinks, Trump could be:

a) much better than Reagan because he puts on an even better act, and actually has some clues about certain things and is capable of much more actual deal-making

b) much worse than Reagan because he puts on an even better act, and actually has some clues about certain things and is capable of much more actual damage

Never cared for Reagan. The man felt that ketchup was a vegetable, and as governor of California, ensured that public school children got their couple packets of ketchup a day with their lunch.

He also implemented the last immigration amnesty program in 1988. Great way to being more illegals to the US. Of course, the Democrats sold him the idea that this would be the last amnesty that the US would ever do, and look at where we are almost 30 years later. Although, now that we have both a Rwpublicam president and Congress, that stands little chance of happening during the next 4 years.

Gorbachev said years later that he didn't trust Reagan during the Glasnost years--Too conscious that he was dealing with an "actor", let alone that Reagan was still stuck in the Cold War 50's.
Bush Sr., OTOH, Gorby confessed great respect for, since Bush had experience and some international awareness from his CIA days, and appreciated that Bush was diplomatic enough not to "gloat" over the Wall coming down, although the temptation was almost irresistible everywhere else in the Republican party.

(Certainly one thing that made 80's Movies what they were during the Reagan years was our nonstop cultural preoccupation with Nuclear War and Evil Russia, and Sting songs about how they probably weren't really bad guys who were ready to blow us up, after all...were they?
You could not have made Rocky IV in any other decade, and we found out why 2010 wouldn't be like "2010".)

Reagan was not only an actor--and knew how NOT to embarrass himself on a live mike or camera at all times--he also had political experience.
He had been president of the Screen Actor's Guild (a political rehearsal for any actor getting ready for California politics), but had also cleaned up as governor of California.
He had Jimmy Carter's (and Ted Kennedy's) uncertainty to make him look that much more polished in the 1980 campaign, but with or without ideas, he at least came prepared to every debate.

Trump's not Reagan.

Reagan had the fluff and the CIA pulling the real strings

Trump has real business acumen and experience.

Comparisons in those two areas are simply silly, there is no contest between who I would rather have.

Reagan wasnt even smart enough to not pick the CIA as VP, and it was a fluke that Bush family friend Hinckley was a poor shot.

He left half the country convinced that trickle down economics would work... It doesn't. There is neither a Correlation, nor Causation that giving tax breaks to corporations will make them pay their employees more.
