As far as I care, anime is an uncountable noun, so it's anime.
I think uncountable nouns don't necessarily mean that the plural and singular forms are the same, it just means we need to refer to the container when we ask for a quantity of an uncountable noun.

I'm sorry, but all this talk about what the proper plural term for anime is reminds me of that one scene from Mystery Men. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuhTQwzizDI

I myself use "anime" as both the singular and plural. Sounds better to me and my spell check doesn't like "animes" so it must be wrong

I guess it's just personal preference, but, going by that logic then we can't change any word from Japanese to a plural way when in English.

animes,
otakus,
kimonos,
mikans,
katanas,
onigiris,
etc,

Someone else brought up 'fish' as both singular and plural, but 'fishes' can also be used as plural. So, like I said, personal preference and whatever comes natural to the speaker.

I usually say anime shows or anime series when I'm talking about the plural. I think that animes sounds bad, and I want to be clear as to whether I'm talking about several individual shows or the overarching concept of anime.
