So, I re-watched Haibane Renmei a couple weeks ago, and I haven't been able to get it out of my head.

Usually, when I watch a show or movie, I finish it, watch a couple of reviews, update my MAL, and then I'm done with it for a while; even if I thought the work in question was exceedingly good.

However, this is a different case. I do think this series is very good, but I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites. But for some reason, I've just been thinking and thinking about it. Maybe I'm having a void or something, I don't know.

Well, I wanted to see if I could get some people who have seen it, and even some who have it, to discuss and have a conversation about it.

So if that seems like a good time, feel free to join the talk.

there were a few moments in this show that creeped me right the fuck out, like when she first went into the wall I was sweating bullets then nothing happened. *my memory might be a bit skewed since I haven't seen it in years.

The part that got me was when she grew her wings in the 1st episode. THE SOUND EFFECTS.

I'd say this was a success. Really in-depth discussion.

I remember that I watched it and that it was alright, but it didn't really resonate with me. I can hardly remember any of it now.

Might be tough to generate discussion on a show that's not currently airing. I mean, take me for example, I remember loving Haibane Renmei, but I saw it years ago, so I can't quite remember specific details to contribute to discussion well

There are certain parts of it that I do remember vividly and have stuck with me over the years though.

Spoilers below, by the way

One is the "circle of sin" idea, which I found quite interesting, if a little confusing. There are also some very powerful scenes that stick out to me, such as the falling dream scene, the crow in the well, and the scene where's she's walking in (or cleaning?) some sort of underground waterway. Oddly, Kana and the clock-tower stick out vividly to me as well.

I think the show had phenomenal atmosphere so that the town of Gile is one of the most memorable locations to me, even after years.

I think I'll have to rewatch this series next time I get a chance.

There's a lot to like about the show, but plenty of things don't really get answered. Where they are, for one. The fact that you never find out what is on the other side of the wall is mysterious. But one thing that always seemed strange to me was the fact that there were so many people in that world who weren't Haibane.

Aside from that, i really do like the whole idea about being born with a dream and then finally ascending when you understand who you were. Plus you add on the idea about believing you can't be saved. Because when your wings turn black, it's not just yourself imagining and believing that you have no chance for redemption, but there's the added fact that everyone else around you knows it as well.
I really liked Reki a lot as a character, she's definitely a forever favorite.

One of my favorite shows.

Pretty sure I watched it after learning it was by the same creator as Serial Experiments Lain, and the premise was interesting of course.

One of the standout things about this series is that the dub is actually really good for once. You hardly ever see that in a "moe" series because western VA's just cant hit the right cute voice without sounding ear-grating.

But Rakka's VA was amazing in the dub. Probably the cutest dub voice I've heard.

The dub trailer is quality too, if you want to give it a watch- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2yKFMPgXmA

Also So Ra No Wo To (Sound of the Sky) reminded me a lot of this series. The themes aren't really too similar, but it features a similar cast of girls in an old European-style town with a mysterious history that made me very nostalgic of this show.

I think they pretty much spelled out most of that, especially when the two women were "making up" the myth as background for the unreadable (?) tablet or whatever. Unless I'm missing the point, they're between Heaven and Earth, and some dead "need" to come there to resolve their mental problems (after suicide?). If they do, they ascend, if not they... reincarnate?, try again in purgatory? Who knows? It's been a while since I saw it but I think going through the door leads to Earth and over the wall (etc., forbidden) leads to Heaven. Most of the specific memorable weird stuff is thematic and visual atmosphere or metaphor, which is why it's so confusing.
