You put this in Polls, but you didn't include a poll, so I've moved it to the Anime forum.

I like a lot of sports anime, some better than others, but am not sure I've got a best.

....

Hm, actually, I think I do. I'd include Chihayafura in the category, and that would be my best.

Also excellent is Ping Pong, which really scribbles, in a most excellent way, all outside the lines of typical shonen sports shows.

Finally, there's Haikyuu -- very solidly fits the genre, is really great at showing highs and lows, and has really great characters.

(Kuroko no Basket was fun for the first season, but I quickly wearied of its heavy reliance on what turned out to be basically "magic basketball" and flashily named plays and abilities, especially during subsequent seasons, so it fell from a short-termed life in "close to best" to "not anywhere close.")

I would say... All Out! because so far they haven't done any stupidly named power plays or physically impossible stunts. Granted, the show is young as yet.

Major (all six seasons). I love the show, though it has a few named moves, but not that many.
Big Windup or Ookiku Furikabutte is fantastic. It is incredibly realistic. No crazy super moves even hinted at here.

Hajime no ippo will always be the god of sports.
Then there's KnB and haikyu which is pretty damn good
Honorable mentions Chihayafuru and Ping pong

2 sports anime that have actually got me to watch their respective sports: Haikyu! and Baby Steps.

I've read a bit of the Eyeshield 21 manga. It's has some pretty crazy humor for a sports manga, but would like to get around to the anime when I can fit in another 100+ ep show.

Yowapeda is probably my favorite. It was my gateway sports anime being the first I really got into. I love that all the characters have a distinct look. That's something that a lot of sports anime suffer from when you have so many characters a lot of them tend to look similar.

Slam Dunk, Haikyu, & Kuroko are up there too.

I need to finish Cross Game. I liked it but stopped about halfway through.

Out of those, I've seen Baby Steps, Kuroko's Basketball, Slam Dunk, and Haikyuu.

I'm not saying it's the best, but Kuroko's Basketball is my favorite. It doesn't have to be realistic to be good
