One of my favorite simulcasts of this season so far is "march comes in like a Lion" from Studio Shaft (which I would recommend that anyone watch), and probably one of the biggest themes that lie within the story is the idea of what a family is to the characters. And that got me thinking about other shows that I've seen that have a strong family theme surrounding them.

And there are plenty of other shows and movies that i could mention here (Uchouten Kazoku, Howls Moving Castle, NGE, etc.), but to start off the topic i'm going to pick Kyousougiga.

Kyousougiga is probably my favorite anime that explores this theme, and while i can't go too much into it without spoiling quite a bit of the plot, it definitely does a fantastic job of looking at familial identity from several points of view; from a child who is noticeably unlike the others and feels estranged because of it, from a child adopted out of tragedy who feels like he's out of place, from an oldest child who feels like they have the most responsibility, from a child who never knew who their family was before, from a mother who felt like she had no choice but to leave her children behind, and from a father who just felt bored and walked out.

There is a lot to talk about in Kyousougiga, and while there is a sort of driving plot behind most of the events, the best part of the show is getting to watch the characters grow around each other, and deal with problems that can often times be very real for some of us. It's thoughtfully written, colorfully executed, and a joy to watch and I would HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.

So what are some of your favorites that explore this theme of family?

I'm starting this topic in anime because I decided to talk about Kyousougiga, but really if you all have some examples that you want to talk about from books, manga, movies, or games I think it'd be nice as well.

Two that I found very enjoyable was Sweetness and Lightning a light hearted series about a widowed father learning to cook for his daughter. The second one is Listen To Me Girls I'm Your Father which is about a young adult who takes in three girls after their parent's deaths. So he has to struggle with his life and the girls also.

I think Clannad is the most obvious example.

After all, "Clannad" literally means "family".

And, true to its name, it's a very heavy theme throughout the series.

Especially After Story, as anyone who's seen it can attest. I dont think any other anime comes close to this one in this theme.

Of course, I also have to mention Wolf Children

The portrayal of the struggles of raising a family is second-to-none and its a wonderfully heartwarming film.

Most of the anime I've watched with familial themes are just parent-child.

I love Usagi Drop, Sweetness & Lightning, and Poco's Udon World which all happen to have a single father taking care of a child, whether it is theirs or not.

I really enjoyed the portrayel of family in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, especially the bond between Edward and Alphonse. Their brotherly relationship is a genuinely uplifting thing to watch (or read in my case since my first exposure was the manga). Really, family and sibling relationships are actually quite a prevalent theme in that series when you think about it.
