So tell me is wanting to have a child a selfish thing to do? As oppose to not wanting a child, how is having a child deemed selfish? What do you think?

Enjoy!!!

Who cares? If you want it you want it. Its no one else's business but your own.

But I don't want a child.

Wanting a child isn't selfish. Not wanting a child isn't selfish.

We all have different goals in life. Sometimes those goals involve starting a family, sometimes they don't. To each their own.

Everything you want is selfish. That's what the words "want" and "selfish" mean.

Well, yes, pretty much that.

And it should be selfish to a certain extent. I mean, who wants to live in a country in which children are born because their parents feel obligated to have them (for society, the government, whatever) and not because they want children?

No. Wanting a child is a natural instinct. It may be selfish to a degree, if you have no clear means of supporting your child, but dreaming is no crime.

Ofcourse it's selfish. You cannot ask the kid if it wants to be born. You make the kid because you want to.

Not saying it's a bad thing lol. But it IS selfish.
Posted 11/16/16
It's selfish if you just want the kid for a fashion accessory. It's not selfish if you wish to dedicate the rest of your life to protecting and raising your children. Once you have a child, it's not about you anymore, all of your priorities should be about making a better life for that child.

I think it isn't whether or not it's selfish; rather, how selfish is it depending on the situation?

If you look at it from a primative/instinctual level, you'll find that most of us are biologically engineered to have the desire to reproduce (like myself, it can change depending on social environments that create multiple reasons not to want a child of your own). This can be construed as being "selfish" because it's something you, as a person/human, desire and want in your life. Though, the variety of reasons can raise or lower the "selfish" level.

If you know you cannot financially support a child without relying on the government as your sole source of income, I would say that having a child is high on the "selfish" level. I've met someone who believed that their "gift" to the world was to have children and raise them; but without the appropriate resources to care for them adequately. This kind of logic is incredibly selfish.

Though, I don't think the "innate" desire to procreate is entirely selfish; but it can be labelled as such mostly due to the fact that it's a desire/want for some people. I don't share that sentiment, though.

IMO yes.

I always hear people say my wish for Immortality is selfish but it's like ....so is your wish to have kids.

You bring a life into this world with no choice and it may suffer.
Then you force it to live even if it wants to commit suicide.
i could go on but having children imo is selfish.

Geez mate the world ain't that bad of a place and I speak as a soldier who has done things that you can't even dream of.

To answer the OP's question no I do not think the actual act of procreation is selfish in and of itself. However some people should frankly not be having children. It is a commitment many people fail to live up to.

Yeah it's worse xD the world is not a beautiful place in truth people just pretend it is.
Doesn't mean living in it isn't good though but to force a child to live in this world is selfish imo.

Mate how would you know what the world is like, ya just 19. Have you even left the city of your birth, are you in fact still living with your parents like so many of your generation are doing. If your world view is shaped entirely by the news and what little living you've done ya might want to hold off on judging the entire world and the human race.

I have seen a whole lot of this world, travelled to a lot of different places. Talked to a lot of different people living under many different conditions. And even I am not entirely sure what judgement I'd pass on the world if I were asked to. So saying that it's selfish to raise a child in this world is a bit much mate. Think about it 20 or thirty years down the road when your passport has a whole lot more stamps in it.

welp, everybody and their moms want children

if everyone is selfish then nobody is selfish
even the ones that were born as a result end up wanting children themselves so they're not in a good position to complain

no regular folk is gunna hate u for wantin a kid

Age doesn't have much to do with knowing what the world is like a 19 year old can know just as much about the world as a 60 year old.

It is selfish inherently to have a child im not saying that is bad it's a good kind of selfish however it's still selfish.
I personally want the less selfish option and to make my life last long (immortality?) so i am not forced to pass my genes down to prolong my genetics.
