Hello!

I am in my last year of university studying performing arts. I have lived, and still do live my life for Theatre and will be pursuing it further as a career, however, it is likely that I won't be in a full time acting job so will need to find a side career for a main/additional income.

I am currently the social media representative for my University and have a passion for Marketing, Graphic Design and Social Media, so my question is really:

WOULD A CAREER WORKING IN MARKETING/SOCIAL MEDIA WORK ALONGSIDE PERFORMING AND AUDITIONS, AND HOW WOULD I APPROACH ENTERING THE BUSINESS PROFESSIONALLY HAVING NOT STUDIED OR TRAINED IN THAT SPECIFIC LINE OF WORK?

I hope you answer, thank you, and this advice corner is a great idea!

The odds of you finding a UK reader of this forum who has expertise in both the marketing industry and performing arts are a little slim, so the advice you receive may not be exactly what you are after. A forum on a site about performing arts may be a better bet.

However if you have no expertise in the field of marketing you are going to be looking for either an entry level job or self-employment. Unfortunately self-employment with no training or prior contacts is very unlikely to be successful. On the other hand, an entry level job in any industry is likely to have set hours - there are lots of people wanting entry level jobs and employers can set the terms that suit them, not you.

Probably the best bet is to have a chat with the career staff at your university or faculty staff involved in marketing related subjects - they may have some ideas for where you can start or contacts who are willing to take a chance on untried talent.

If what I have said isn't helpful, consider this a bump to get the topic back to the top of the page.
