I've been wondering... what makes a good thread good? What really defines a thread to stand out from others or to be enjoyable? What do you think is essential to have in mind when making a good thread?

I've brought this topic up before with someone in CR PM's (Won't mention you unless you want me too) and I agreed with most of what they said. Pretty much as I see it good threads have a subject that is somewhat open. Open to have more responses or extra questions about the subject to feel more like a discussion. I think a good thread should have the OP stating how they feel about the subject they're posting (without coming off as harsh or offensive depending on the subject *coughs*). That's at least my thoughts on it however I'm very curious what other people have to say on this subject.

So tell me... What makes a good thread... good in your opinion.

Well tourney threads are the best imo. But other than that, I guess if it causes thought-provoking discussion, then it's pretty good. Or I usually like threads where I can answer something about myself.

Usually a thread that won't cause polar opposite sides to clash and makes people want to respond to it is good.

Lately it feels like most of the forums would say, "Bait." Especially of the political or ideological variety.

...being a mod again, in some ways I find it's kind of hard to post in a lot of threads. I don't want people to confuse my personal opinion with how I mod, you know? It's one reason I try to only post in ones where I don't think I'll have to deal with issues - and if issues come up, I make sure to pass off reports to other mods just so it doesn't look like I'm enforcing my opinion. I know, that might seem off topic a bit, but it really does play into this!

And now I'll get into philosophy So, to me a good OP is like the roots of a tree. It grips things, and guides the rest in general. The first several posts will be the trunk, winding the way through some discussion points, and generally showing how the rest will go. More posts will be branches, leaves, and flowers - mostly related to the original still, but sometimes simply replies to what was said. Once they spin off too far, they should become their own tree, so that the first one isn't weighted down to one side by that single discussion.

Okay, taking that hat off since it felt weird. Really, an OP needs to be meaty enough to get people interested, and hopefully express an opinion. A sole link to a news article isn't a useful post, someone could just go to the news site for that. A series of news posts comparing and contrasting views, that's interesting and can generate discussion! Because, really, an OP should be about generating discussion, and yes, that sometimes includes dissenting opinions. Insults and attacks tend to shut down discussion rather than fostering them, which is one reason I dislike them.

Also, troll/useless posts tend to just clutter discussion, so in general, if the first page has a few of those, I won't post there for the most part. Making an exception here, since while I'd call a few of those posts off-topic/trolling, they weren't reported and I won't touch since they do figure into my post as well as of this paragraph.
