This is a question with little purpose, but those who are banned for like 30 year spans, what are they typically banned for? I understand those whom are banned for a couple days or even a week, but what triggers something so severe as to being banned for YEARS/Permanently?

Some posted porn.
Some did constant harassment of lots or certain people.
And then there's people like Vega which I'm not exactly sure why he got banned for 3000 years. Maybe he was just too much for our small minds to handle.

I don't see the point when you can typically get a new IP address by restarting your modem and there are disposable e-mail address websites out there. One could literally have 100 accounts if they wanted.

They'll get tired eventually. I know I did.

This exactly, it doesn't seem like such an efficient way to handle things.

Hm, well it seems few would react the same way, though.

Human endurance can only take so much. Even if you get a new IP, you still have to make a new email account, and I do not know how to have a bot do it for me.

They have to be what parole officers refer to as "Incorrigibles", ie., they weren't there to follow rules, they have no INTENTION of cleaning up and playing by them, and there's not going to be much future in watching them try. You can only "warn" someone so many times before they think you're bluffing.
SilverSongwriter obviously wasn't going to turn over a new leaf and be everybody's serious-important discussion pal, talking to Deyre is literally talking to a brick wall, MagicalSoul posted in her own nutty vacuum with no interest in what anyone else had to say, and you saw the futility of trying to hold a rational conversation with Belladonnagirl.

Just have to think in the longterm, and establish enough of a record.

Hahahah well in that case that seems to answer things, it seems I over-estimate and expect them to be "full-fledged" or hyper persistent.

Eh, anyway. I was just wanting to inquire about how people are issued such absurdly long bans seeing as most people are just banned for a couple of days.

Many thanks, m9s.

Ah, yeah. That's what I expected, that thought crossed my mind or someone exploiting certain things on the forums...

perma-bans probably fits one (or more) of these categories:
1. post pictures that is deemed inappropriate (lewd and gory content)
2. spam the forums for no other purpose than to clog the forums (spam bots)
3. repeatedly violate rules by making racist or otherwise comments that is considered "flame-bait"
(possibly as a result of a very bad thread)

I've moved this to Site Support / Minor Questions.

Many of the really long bans were people who spammed "make money fast" types of ads. These days we mostly just delete those accounts outright after a short ban that stops their immediate actions while we clean up.

There are very, very few long term bans aside from those. They are usually imposed on users who repeatedly caused trouble and broke rules, and after several increasingly longer bans just kept coming back to do it again.

Well, since I'm back to modding again, I usually use them for one of two reasons:
1) Person needs to fix something. Maybe porn on their page, something awful in their profile pic, etc. It's basically "fix this, PM me, and I'll unban you, but until then you can't play." I've currently got one of those pending, actually..
2) Person appears to be beyond redemption. Threats to the community, ever increasing bans that don't do the trick, etc.

Sure, people do get around bans by making alts. Then we have the original account to check against the alt, since it's still banned. There's no perfect solution, of course. Only point is to hope that we can keep the forums better than folks who want to bring it down have patience for.

I mean, the immature audience that most commonly posts lewd stuff does indeed consist of that, also. Posting porn is the quickest way to kind of scream "I'm trolling" or "Look how funny this is, LOL" directly. Also, it's an eye-puller obvi
