Moved this over to Conventions, you'll probably get some better info here

Personally, I enjoyed A-Kon down in Dallas a few times in the past, and AX out near Disneyland (with a side trip to Disneyland, of course). They're both pretty big, so if you plan on doing any big events, be sure to get in line early!

Depends on what you're looking for. I don't recommend AX though unless you like paying separately for everything and, unless you buy the Premier Pass ($350), you'll spend your time waiting in lines for two hours for a slim chance of getting in to a panel. Hotels close to the con are very pricey (about $250 a night), so even if you room share, it's still high. I guess you could always look into something like AirBnB, but as the con is right next to the Staples Center, I'd expect it to be high. Food is also very expensive in the area, unless you buy from a questionable street vendor or fight it out with others for a table at the one Denny's located quite a distance away from the con.

Other than a larger con, it would help to know what you're interested in primarily - music, autographs, exclusive merchandise, etc. I'd probably recommend SakuraCon for a larger con where everything is still included in the ticket price, or a smaller, but still fairly decent sized con like AnimeFest in Dallas or Animazement in Raleigh. Both have very inexpensive, solid hotels and the food is reasonably priced in the vicinity.

Have you tried going to the Meetups.com site and then find a group who will be going to a convention? I recall that there was a group meetup for Animazement. Meetups are a good way to meet likeminded people without having to go through all the akward speed dating panels and other things that cons organize for member interaction.

You can also meet a lot of nice people while waiting in lines. I met all my con buddies by standing in autograph lines at various cons throughout the years.
