mod response time: 8/10
sometimes they take longer, but in general they (mostly Ioreen) handle things fairly quickly.
it didn't take very long for a forum spammer (spam bot, not just a troll) getting their posts / threads removed.

mod decision on how to handle reports: 6/10
mods here tend to be a bit too lenient at times. sometimes that's great, but if you need to lock and re-open a thread 5+ times, there's a very good chance the thread should remain locked.

being able to contact a mod and get a response: 7 / 10
this is a hit or miss. sometimes the mod can respond quickly, but other times it may take a day or two to get a reply back.

average: 7 / 10. good, but there's definitely room for improvement.

To me it is not at all clear that General Discussion is not the place for political threads (bickering though, if taken too far, does not belong in any of CR's forum sections.) If something doesn't clearly belong in any of the other sections and isn't against rules (like those about advertising) then by default it does belong in General Discussion.

Honestly, I feel that it's not that hard to avoid getting involved int them, and most of them are easy to spot (and thus avoid) based on the thread title, but I do understand that it can also be annoying to see even just the thread titles.

That said, even though it is not my personal preference, we are very seriously considering creating another forum section for political and controversial subjects. I just hope that if we do that it doesn't end up like the infamous "Extended Discussion" section that we used to have.

It's not so much that they are hard to avoid participating in, it's more that they continue to take up a vast portion of the real estate in the GD forum such that General Discussion has become by default Political Whining. You may be right in saying that the current current we frequently see in GD belongs in GD. At the same time, however, we already have a Chit Chat forum and an Advice forum here that contain material that could also fit within in GD too so I'm not really seeing why it would be a stretch to split GD content further. I'd actually personally rather see Chit Chat and/or Advice folded back into GD and the religion/political stuff excised if there was a concern about creating too many sub forums.

If the concern is that the current GD content moved to it's own space would just make the new space a cesspool/wind tunnel with just a few people screaming at each other in a bid for pointless internet brownie points then I see little wrong with that. If the users who partake in that sort of discourse, or who have demonstrated a clear history of flooding the forums with pointless content anyways, aren't being shut down long term anyway then I'd rather they just have their own padded room to exist within. Of course, I realize that this is just the perspective of a user and not a mod, and I appreciate that your role is a lot more difficult than just logging in and reading/posting, but I would imagine I'm also not alone in seeing the current situation as I do.

The mod team is not currently being led by someone with a good demeanor for such a job. I believe that the leadership vacuum from Baker's departure last year is a big reason why the forums are in its current state.

Mods have lives outside CR too so response time to a "burning" question can, understandably, be slower than wished. CR has a larger fan base now than when I first joined. I think they are doing a respectable job keeping CR fun, safe.

Then I would appreciate it if you would personally unlock Spoon Knight vs The Dragon and move it to GD.

Done.

That's somewhat subjective; It seems to me that usually when I look at page 1 of GD, there's a mix of stuff. However, you certainly aren't the only one who feels the recent proportion of political to other sorts of threads is too heavy on the political side.

You may be right in saying that the current current we frequently see in GD belongs in GD. Well, Chit Chat and Advice actually were not fully part of General Discussion -- at least not after early 2012 (I wasn't around before that so I don't know what it had been like previously). When I started using the forums, individual threads that were considered "personal--be it introductions, asking for help or recommendations, or just letting folks know you were sad because your cat needed surgery--were simply not allowed. Also, random chat was not permitted in General Discussion. The only "chat" thread was "Chat with the Mods" which later became "Chat with Everybody" and no other "chat" oriented threads were allowed. There was a single "Introductions" thread that folks would post their introduction in, but you were not allowed to create your own separate thread to introduce yourself. There was a single thread for requesting general help, and forums like Anime, Manga, TV each had a single "request a recommendation thread." If you started a new thread to chat, introduce yourself, ask for help, or for recommendations, your thread was closed and you were referred to one of those existing mega-threads. If you posted to say you had a bad day or a great day, the thread was simply closed; there was no space where those were allowed. I can imagine that was probably because at one time people complained at having the main discussion forum cluttered up with those kinds of threads.

Anyway, Chit Chat and Advice (and Enthusiasts' Corner where you can promote your CR groups, or youtube channel or whatever), were completely new when we reworked the forums in December 2014, and the kinds of threads allowed there hadn't existed except in a very stunted "mega-thread" way for at least three years, and probably longer.

If the concern is that the current GD content moved to it's own space would just make the new space a cesspool/wind tunnel with just a few people screaming at each other in a bid for pointless internet brownie points then I see little wrong with that.

My opinion with what's wrong with that, is that if that's what it becomes it shouldn't exist on CR at all. I agree that, especially lately in the political climate of the US election campaign and results, these threads in GD are often unpleasant or quickly become so, but I'm concerned that in too much isolation they would just become worse -- that's what happened when we previously had that type of separate forum. That "Extended Discussion" was merged back into General Discussion in December 2014, so I'm not sure how much chance you had to see what it was like.

but I would imagine I'm also not alone in seeing the current situation as I do.

About that, you are correct.
