See the second post for an ordering of the PreCure series (including movies). My initial question was answered, but I've left it here in the spoiler below for archival purposes.

Behold the fruits of my labor - a list that took me over an hour to make and format to post in a thread that no one is going to read and less than no one is going to use. Aside from me, of course. Still, I'll post it here anyway.

Mods - I hope you'll overlook the double post. I really do want to make this a separate entity from my initial question.

I think I'll come back here and update this as new seasons of Precure begin and end. Maybe it will be of use to someone someday, who knows?

I'd give you kudos just for putting that together if I could. Would be nice if Toei gave some more PreCure to CR.

Done.

I debated whether or not to call it that originally, but since I haven't seen it yet, I wasn't aware that there were any real differences other than the name.

Thanks for the feedback.

Similarly, if anyone else has any feedback, let me know. Also feel free to post news about upcoming series if I don't happen to catch it (preferably with air date info or link to a source with it).

maho girls (aka mahoutsukai precure) is expected to air the last episode on the 29th of January
source: http://暇つぶしサイト.jp/category23/entry406.html
that means, there should be a total of 51 episodes
this can of course change, as natural disasters may cause delays in the broadcast.
assuming maho girls really end on the 29th, the next season should start on the 5th of February.

Much obliged!

Keeping this list is really going to put me in the mood to catch up.

========== EDIT ==========

Updated the list to account for the recently ended Maho Girls Precure (corrected episode count and removed the asterisk).

An important note

I don't know how much traffic this thread will get, but if anyone wants to post general thoughts about the Precure series or specific iterations of it, I would love to hear them! I don't think there's really a place for people to talk about the whole series on CR, so I'd love for this thread to be that place if anyone feels like it.

But I know these threads don't get much traffic, and Precure itself is probably kind of niche due to availability, but still, feel free to post any thoughts on the series if you have them. If it catches on, then I may make a note in the first post and possibly ask for a mod to change the name.

As for me, since my last post I have gotten through Splash Star and about half of Yes! Precure 5. Personally, I thought Splash Star was AMAZING! It felt like the Precure formula was perfected and had superb villains. I'm not really as interested in Yes! Precure 5 and find myself stalling a bit on it. I don't know... it just feels too "super sentai-y". Plus I'm not as attached to the characters and the villains are way worse to me personally. But that's just my opinion, of course.

========== EDIT 2 ==========

Well, it doesn't look like that's catching on That's fine though, as I guess I didn't really expect it to.

Another thing I want to note is that as I've been watching this, the movies don't seem to have much continuity with the main series. Extremely important things can happen in the show or the movie and are immediately forgotten once you move on in the order listed here. I don't know if that's just a trait of these early series (as I'm only up to Yes! PreCure 5), but it's still somewhat disappointing...

Regardless, I'm pretty sure the movies are in the "right place" - I just don't think they're too related to the continuity of the show. At least not yet. Thus, you might be all right if you watch them roughly around the place they're at. I'll make it known if my opinion changes on this matter in the future.

Splash Star...kintoleski was great :p
that moment when he tried to teach cure Bloom how to draw...lel

yes! precure 5....i personally found it enjoyable, and yes it's more fight-oriented. worth noting that cure Dream is considered by some (and iirc in movies as well) as the lead cure of all cures. take it however you will.

as for me, i started with Smile Precure. loved the jokes and how playful / light-hearted it was. Smile Precure was actually the reason i started watching the rest of the precure series. I even finished the infamous Dokidoki and only haven't watched Futari / Max Heart, which is supposed to be very similar to Splash Star anyways (the main characters also look very similar).

Yes, the scenes with Kintoleski were pure gold

Yes! Precure 5 is enjoyable to me too (particularly this second half), but I think I got too used to the formulas from Futari, Max Heart, and Splash Star, so that the changes in Yes! Precure 5 probably threw me off at first. Interesting that Cure Dream would be a leader. I would have thought a title like that would go to the originals, Cure Black and Cure White. However, as early as I am in the series, I'm still not quite sure how the various Pretty Cures relate to each other cross-season. I guess I'll find out when I get to the first All Stars movie. I like Cure Dream when she's transformed though. She seems pretty heroic.

I'll look forward to Smile Precure, as it sounds like a series I'd really like from your description. And I've noticed that everyone seems to have a pretty poor opinion of DokiDoki - kind of eager to see what that's all about.

Futari is great! (But I don't know how it would hold up for a seasoned veteran of later series like yourself). Since it was my first, for me it's kind of the "default". But in terms of structure, it is very similar to Splash Star. The characters look similar and even fulfill similar roles, but they're still pretty different. For example Saki is more optimistic and easy-going than Nagisa, who is kind of hot-headed and more tomboyish.

I'm curious - what's you favorite season so far? Is it Smile?

possibly Smile, though i found all of them, except dokidoki, to be pretty enjoyable in their own ways. smile was one of the rare series that left me smiling after watching many of the episodes ^_* definitely recommend watching the original (the dubbed version changed things and even removed a few key episodes). as for dokidoki, i can almost guarantee your eyes will roll at least at some point..like this >_>. catchy insert songs though!
btw as you're watching in order - you'll notice that sometimes they take inspirations from previous seasons, which is pretty cool!

edit: it goes without saying, but Smile! is very different from Futari / Max Heart / Splash Stars!
they focused on comedy rather than action, so don't expect another kintoleski. Suite is also a bit hated on, especially because of a trivial conflict, but i still found it had its own charm (the first episode was unintentionally amusing though).

Interesting. So it sounds like there's more variety between the various seasons than I thought there was. Yea, I saw a clip of "Glitter Force" after your initial suggestion and it didn't look like a dub I wanted to watch. Just the fact that they call them "glitters" instead of cures tipped me off that I may want to avoid it. Kind of a shame since I am a bit of Laura Bailey fan, but I'd rather keep consistency in watching it all subbed anyway..

The comedy focus intrigues me, The action scenes in Precure can be pretty good, but I think I like it more for the slice-of-life aspects, so one with a bit more comedy might actually be more up my alley. That's part of why Splash Star is my current favorite, since even though the battles are great, so far my favorite battles have been in Futari and Max Heart.

It will be awesome to see inspiration from previous seasons though. I flipped out when they brought back Ganbalance de Dace in Yes! Precure 5 (as that's become my favorite ending theme so far!) Can't wait to see more little nods to the past!

Hey folks. Thought you might like to know that a thread for the new Precure has started up in the Anime forum.

/forumtopic-982461/kirakiraprecure-a-la-mode-discussion

(I'm sure banter about other Precure stuff and series wouldn't be unwelcome there as long as folks are mindful about spoilers.)

Thanks for the heads up!

I'll definitely poke my head in the KiraKira thread from time to time - partially to verify information I use to maintain this list, and partially to get a feel for what the community's opinions are. Glad to know people are keeping up with it there.

Trailers for Dream Stars certainly looked nice. I try to avoid stuff about A La Mode until I actually start watching it, but trailers like those keep getting me drawn into it - especially for Cure Macaron and Cure Chocolat.

I'm kind of surprised it took them this long to come up with a Precure smartphone game though. Seems like a logical step for a multi-media franchise like Precure. Mobile gaming has never been my sort of thing, and even this Precure incarnation doesn't look like enough to get me to start, but even so it will be extremely interesting to see if it catches on.
