Post Reply Are you an open otaku?

One time, I tried to tell my parents about anime but they didn't understand it other than that fact that it's for children.

As for friends, well, I don't have any. But, if I did, I wouldn't bring it up unless they were into it as well or they asked me.

I don't like the term but then again I don't really like labels either. I do like anime and I will talk about it but I'm not necessarily going out of my way to tell people I watch it.

What kind of otaku are we talking about? It is a loan word from Japanese and while I've never gotten around to actually learning the language *coughlazycough* past my first failed attempt in college, and it tends to have a fluctuating meaning.

I'm obsessive (in general) and don't get out of the house much. You get me started on one of my obsessions, and I'll likely go on and on about it long past your own point of interest. When I first learned of the more common meaning where otaku = animé/manga/Japan-ish-stuff-in-general fan, I started using it for screen names and the like. When I learned of its more varied meanings, I kept using it because overall, it still seemed to work. Plus seriously, if I got rid of it now it would just be too confusing; message boards where I've been "Otaku" since the early 2000s, same for e-mail addresses containing the word, been reviewing Pokémon cards under that screen name for that long as well... yeah, even if we use a definition that excludes me, I'd be sticking with it. XD

Now most are familiar with my general penchant for nerdiness, obsessing with stuff, etc. It has taken me decades to not bore the pants off of anyone around me droning on about my interests. I don't hide it, but I am ever-so-slightly hesitant to bring it up because like I said, once I get started I have a very difficult time stopping.

I talk about anime an embarrassing amount tbh. The people I work with think it's weird.

I don't really consider myself an otaku. I enjoy my fair share of anime but that's it. I don't collect figures, or read much manga. I have a couple One Piece shirts but that's about it. I'm also into a lot of other things than just anime. It's not my sole hobby.

With that said I'm the only one I know that watches anime regularly, but everyone knows I do. In fact I like it like that since it's what makes me stand out a little. I'll often share clips of some crazy anime with them and we all get a laugh out of it. A few days ago I showed them a little bit of Keijo!!!.

I'll talk about anime with friends who are interested in anime. I've mentioned it to my parents before, but it's not a subject that comes up frequently. But then I wouldn't call myself an otaku, as I have quite a bit else going on in my life besides anime.

I don't hide it but I don't start conversations with it. I like seeing the looks of surprise I get

For the last time, I am not an Otaku. I am just an anime fan.

Not really an otaku, though I do sometimes watch anime during classes if I'm watching an anime that I'm very interested in.

Besides, it doesn't bother me. If someone made fun of me for liking anime I would just hit them over the head with my ridiculously overpriced college textbook.

I wouldn't start a conversation with it, but I don't hide it from people and I'll bring it up if someone asks, like, "what is your favourite TV show?" I don't wear t-shirts (I hate the material), but I usually have a keychain or phone accessory that might tip strangers off.

Definitely not. Way too many people think anime only equals kid shows or hentai....

(I'm assuming OP is referring to its western informal usage as anime fan rather than its actual meaning in this case)
