When watching anime there is a word that sounds like Youkai which is translated as 'roger' What is the word and what is a more literal translation? Thank you in advance.

Youkai? You meant Ryoukai

了解 ( りょうかい )

1. comprehension; consent; understanding; agreement; roger (on the radio)
2. roger; I understand

"lost in translation" - i'm sure you heard of this before

it's pretty funny how people decide to translate/intepret the original text-- some added in things that are not even there to begin with

Funimation is notorius with it-- using constitution with their translation in their dub series

if you don't believe me try watching a Funimation dub anime but using the subtltles for the Japanese audio-- it will not match up at all

Because it was in General Discussion, instead of Advice, Info, Recommendations, where I've now moved it.

Hi all. Thanks for the quick replies. I'm sorry I caused problems in the placement of my question. What was throwing me was I wasn't hearing the R in Ryoukai. Thank you all again.

"Ryoukai" sounds like "youkai" because there isn't an "R" sound in Japanese. It's something between an R/L and D sound (there's a tongue tap).

Thank you. That helps clarify it for me.
