Its not that I take offense to it but I do believe it is inaccurate in many cases. The definition of cartoon is a 2 dimensional rendition used normally for humor or satire. Caricatures for example come from the same word. Animation or "anime" refers to any sort of animated media rather than media that is live action or still.

For example if you had a comic strip those are still cartoon characters depending on the time in which you used the word. Animated cartoons were first used to describe the early animations which became famous under people like Disney. Anime which is now a term used for Japanese style animation (sometimes argued only Japanese in origin but there are good arguments against this definition) can be cartoons if they follow the same criteria. So an anime that is exaggerated in features with the purpose satire and comedy would be considered an anime cartoon in my eyes. Bobobobobo-bo would be an example of an anime that is also a cartoon.
I would disagree that Death Note would be a cartoon but is most definitely an anime.

I draw in manga style and western style cartoons as well. I call myself a "cartoonist" even if all my stories aren't funny because a "cartoon" is a catchall term for exaggerated, character-based art. In anime, the face is heavily stylized even if the body is not, which makes it a form of cartooning.

But I still do get a bit upset when some people call anime "cartoons" because I know they're not following my definition. The word "cartoon" still has a really negative reputation because of the cheaply animated shows of the 60s and 70s. That's why, n most peoples eyes, a cartoon is automatically a children's genre. Most people aren't aware of cartoons geared towards adults outside of bawdy humor shows such as Family Guy and South Park. Predictably, the same people who dismiss anime as "just Japanese cartoons" will also argue that Family Guy is not a cartoon because it's geared for adults.

Meh. I don't really mind when people call anime 'cartoons'. I guess it does somewhat irritate me when people don't know the difference between manga and anime, but I mean if it doesn't seem like they care, I'd rather not get worked up about it.

This issue have some complexity than what it seems on surface. The few large uncommunicative American cartoon companies do not want Japanese animation to be recognized as unique due to their jealousy; they prevent official labels from being used to distinguish Japanese animation from animation by other nations to associate the success of anime with American cartoons. The few large American companies do not want to be competitive so they enforce heavy economic sanction against anime to maintain their oligopoly. They further use white-collar hacking in Facebook and Google+ to takeover the large anime communities, associate the success of Japanese anime with American cartoon, and ban anyone from using a unique term for Japanese animation. Two photo here can show some proof:
