How many MAIN characters in an anime is the right amount? How many is too many? How many is not enough? Why? Does it depend on the genre of anime? Does it depend on the amount of episodes?

Imo, three main characters in an anime is the perfect amount because it shows just enough perspective and variety and allows for the characters to be interesting without overwhelming you with characters.

As long as you aren't constantly thinking "why haven't I seen them for so long and why are they focusing so much on this lame plotline?" The number might not matter as long as it can be kept interesting.

I would agree with three, though up to five could be acceptable...

However, in both Durarara and Bacanno, I enjoyed the numerous perspectives given, and never found myself wishing that less characters were focused on.

I don't think it really matters how many there are, as long as the story is adapted to fit that amount.

There's no set amount. I depends on how they're used. A story with a single main character can be great if that character is interesting enough, and a story with a dozen main characters can be great if the pacing and plot are handled well.

Roughly one per plotline. Without a plotline of their own to pursue, a character is going to feel like a support character following the lead of another.

I think around 108 is about as high as you can go.

The number varies depending on how long the show is going to run and how much development the characters get

Some shounen anime series. Or some characters that haven't appeared in such a long time.

I would say that it depends on both the number of episodes and how well the characters are handled.

My gut instinct is to say 4, as I feel like 4 gives good variety while still being small enough to get strongly attached to each. Many of my favorite shows consist of the so-called "four girl ensemble" trope.

However, Idol shows have shown me that upwards of 9 characters can still work well.

So for practical purposes, I'll say that for me, 10 or more is probably too many. However, I don't consider that a hard limit.

Isn't that made by the same person?

Depends on how much the author can handle. Some can have a dozen main characters at once and it works fine while others can only focus on one or two at a time.

The same as how long a story should be: more than it needs to be.
