A lot of times for me it depends on the book. A lot of stuff that's boring to me I can't visualize specifically because I'm not enjoying what I'm reading. Sometimes with science fiction I also can't visualize some things because they'll be describing an alien race or something completely different from the norm and their description isn't really very good (I just had that with Stephen Baxter's Proxima... LOVED the book, but all the creaters they kept talking about I couldn't visualize at all, and it bothered the hell out of me the whole way through). There have been plenty of science fiction books where I can visualize the creatures and aliens or other technical things though, like in Ann Aguirre's Grimspace series, or SK Dunstall's Linesman series. Basically visualization can be a crapshoot at best. =P
