Neil Druckmann, the director himself, said how he couldn't picture another last of us game w/o these characters. Like, it wasn't viable.

He also said that he knows how passionate a lot of their fans are and he swears he and the rest of the team will do right by us. He sounded very confident in the interview at the psx panel.

Eh, should you need to do a sequel at all, pull a Fallout and set it in a different part of the country, or a different country entirely. Or perhaps tell it from the perspective of someone in what remains of the military. Or perhaps a member of the Fireflies having to deal with the fallout of Joel done having F'd your schnitzel up in the first game.

There are viable things they could have done with the franchise that are less of a gamble. He says it's "not viable" because people felt strong attachments to Ellie and Joel, but that's what makes using them again dangerous.

Basically, they're forcing the bar higher.

(On a random note, can you imagine the reaction if a developer didn't sound confident about the game they're working on? For example, Sean Murray, "So we're going to have 18 quintillion planets. I mean, not really, but it sounds impressive, right? Oh, they may not look different.. Um, maybe a little, perhaps a color palette swap? What do you do? Uh... Well.. stuff? Ah! You'll spend a lot of time shooting at rocks. I suppose some people might enjoy that?")

They could have even done a prequel.
With Ellie's Mother and Marlene.
Not saying it's a great idea but it less risky than fucking everything they built from the first game but the movie may do that.

You're comparing someone who had basically no history to tell of video game making to someone who has directed and created some of the best video games to date. I think I'll trust Neil a lot more than a nobody like Sean.

My point was more that developers always sound confident about what they're working on, it'd be news if they didn't. I used Murray as an example since his debacle was recent, but I could just have easily pointed at Peter Molyneux or Chris Roberts, or many others.

In fairness, you have to sound confident, because nobody is going to give your game a chance if you aren't. And most probably honestly are confident they can do it. I don't think anybody (well, anybody with a shred of integrity) deliberately sets out to make a bad game.

Well, we're also in an era where games end up sucking (which to an extent can be subjective, but usually it's the majority speaking for itself). The fact that he publicly said to a huge audience "And all I ask is that the fans of the first game put some faith in us, trust us, we're going to do right by you." is saying a lot. He knows that the first game was a commercial success, I have very little doubt he'll screw up his very own sequel, but hey, stay skeptical all you want. I suppose it's wise to be at the end of the day, but this is the very same guy that has created some of the best, beloved games of our gaming world. Just keep that in mind.

I found the first game to be perfect and it doesn't need a sequel but I'm certainly excited for it and Ni No Kuni 2.

Oh, I certainly put far more stock in Druckmann's words than Murray or Molyneux, I did say I'm "cautiously optimistic" about the sequel in my first post.

That paragraph was referring to the industry in general, which is why I placed it in parentheses and prefaced it with "On a random note", though I probably ought to have said something like "general note" instead. It was a, "Haha, can you imagine if..." sort of tangent.

it's pretty obvious that Joel's brother/sister in law and the people they live with were killed as the fireflies hunting down for Ellie again

"My gun will comfort me.. because i know i'll kill my enemies when they come.."

the RISE of a Survivor!

2018 is too long of a wait for this game!

So hyped!!!

Elie will be the lead on Last of Us 2, I mean, she's the one that the players will be controlling not Joel. Watch the Last of Us Part 2 Panel @ PSX
