You're not just paying for the higher resolution, you're paying for whats known as the 3c's.
Clarity
Color
Contrast

The more you have of each the better the TV. You mentioned the quantum dots, those add about a billion more colors than your standard tv! yes... a billion.
So distance wise when you're 12-14ft away, you may not have a HUGE difference in details. But your color and contrast difference will be extreme

$1400 for a 65 inch Quantum Dot? Holy crap that's a STEAL. $1888 here in Canada for a 55" Samsung KS8500 Quantum Dot that's with $1000 off...just got one recently. Is this US?

I dont even know what the hell 4k is. Humans still have not mastered video reproduction techniques.

I don't know why they say its 4k but still use 1080p, i guess it makes it sound bigger than it actually is. Idk I don't like how misleading marketing can be. Just like hearing a cable company advertise an internet connection as "50 megs" not telling you its only 50/8 megabytes. Technically they're right but it makes you think that your download speed is 50 megabytes per second, not 50 megabits (which is really 1/8 of 50).

thanks fellas....

for that distinction, it would depend on your source - if your source is only 1080p then a 4k tv isnt going to magically invent the extra stuff, its got to be present in the signal.

looks like it is true.. 2017 will be the year of full transition to 4K tv sets.. at least for Samsung..

Samsung even threw out 3D feature in all of their 2017 tvs.. glad to see i'm not the only one ..

Sony and Panasonic will enter the OLED tvs market... so LG, Philips, Panasonic and Sony.. more competition is better.. now bring down the price of OLED tvs.. it's time to replace the decade old LCD tech that they keep using.. now with Quantum dots and hdr ..with some costing more than OLED tvs....

SUHD now QLED ? leave it to these companies to come up with fancy terms to sell their products.. it's still not OLED

Nope, don't need or want one. Might consider a 4K monitor but I can wait till the price drops.

I have a 58" 4k, not HDR. It wasn't a regrettable purchase, but I come to realize that I hardly need 4k resolution as most of my inputs are 1080p--the only exception being my PC, which is set to 2160p (but 175% desktop zoom pretty well renders that inane outside of anything but games that support 4k resolution.)

i bought a 3D 1080p in 2011

rarely use 3D..

most of my local channels are still 720p until recently..

it will take a while for them to upgrade.. which is why i'm not in a hurry to upgrade

since it might not be until 2021 -2023 for media contents to be readily available in 4K.. and by then they will be trying to push 8K next...

Yes, and it's 3D (active). I love watching 3D movies at home.

Is there even a point? I bought a 1080p tv instead 2 years ago since I have no 4k channels, games or movies to use at that resolution.

Heck I barely notice a difference between 720p and 1080p except when it comes to things like sports and perhaps movies like Avatar.

Maybe in 5 years when there are actually more things supported and the next newer thing is out I'll pick one up for a fraction of the current price, but don't really feel like spending the money atm

Don't have any 4K's yet. There aren't many things that can fully utilize 4K resolution right now. Heck anime is still being rendered in 720p.

Another reason is that Sony pretty much immediately announced an 8K series. Might as well wait it out and get an 8K screen in 2020.
