Unions are still very much alive in NY. Considering certain companies will fuck over their employees to maximize revenue, it's a good thing that they exist. Although I've been working as early as I was able to get my working papers, I've never joined one but I still benefit from their existence.

You heard of "at will" states

i'm living in one of them. I can quit at any time and they can fire me at any time

there's no need for 2 week notice around here either

giving them a 2 week notice is pretty much giving them a letter saying "fire me right now"

I know some people think that it's the proper way to quit a company by giving them 2 week notice.. but around here it's wise to only do it if you already found another job (or ready to work elsewhere the next day)

No way. My crummy job tried (and failed) to get me to work on Christmas last year, but this year, I gave them an advance notice specifically stating that I want that day off. Any overtime I might get on that day is simply not worth it.

I work the whole weekend, just like it's a regular one. I guess someone has to man the hospitals.

I'll start by saying hats off to all those in the medical profession who work at xmas. For those in the retail profession too who actually suck it up and take all the shit, unlike me.

When I was 17 I had a Christmas job in Argos.

Worst. Place. To. Work. Ever!

It was horrible, they treat you like a machine that doesn't have emotions. Anyway, I had to work Christmas Eve 12-8pm. All my family were having Christmas Eve dinner and having fun, and there was me working all day (you have to work 4 hours before you're allowed a 10 minute break). The managers were a pair of bitches and really horrible. So Christmas Eve, right before closing some last minute shopping idiots were piling through the shop (supposed to close at 8 we ended up at 8:30 at this point) and we were trying to close up and go home. So I just threw my badge on the floor and told everyone to fuck off I'm going home to be with my family. Obviously I was fired but YOLO! I went home and we all watched a Christmas movie, it was magical. I was also down to work Boxing Day but HAHA no I played my new games with my Bro and cousins all day. I found a new job which I loved in the New Year as a lifeguard in a leisure centre indoor water park.

Would've been neat as well, but everybody is off from work on New Year's anyway so it's fine.
I feel you on the not wanting to work after Christmas part though.
