Usually when a new system releases sales of the previous model fall like a rock unless the successor is poorly received like the PS3 and 3DS were. The Wii was already on a downward spiral when Wii U hit. Probably because the lack of games and functionality.

That said, the PS3 is still selling but in very small numbers. The numbers collapsed after the PS4 was released. It's hard to say what would happen after the PS5 is released.

The PS4 is popular with developers and gamers, has loads of functionality in Blu-ray and streaming. If it ever got the casual price tag of $200 and time I'm sure it could put up PS2 numbers. But that doesn't seem feasible these days.

psp/ ps3 sold 80+ millions despite the rocky start..

when i was overseas in 2010.. a PS3 was $300 at the time (US) .. the same system was available in a mall oversea for $600!

maybe not many people want a $150 PS3 in the US nowaday.. but i'm sure it is now affordable for people in other regions.. i guess this is why they still making the consoles well into the future..

i found the article

http://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/rip-playstation-2-sony-halts-production-of-the-worlds-most-successful-game-console/

December 28, 2012-- so 12-ish year..

PS3 came out November 2006 ? it's 2017.. so in a way - it's a 10+ year cycle pretty much.. the most recent PS3 firmware update was on November 2016..

Wal-mart is selling the PS4 slim uncharted 4 bundle for $270 at the moment

the same bundle was $212 on Cyber Monday at Amazon and Target.. so i think that price tag will be the norm pretty soon

if not $250 will be the new standard price.. by June 2017 or November 2017

when Scorpio comes out Sony will chop the price of their systems

PS4 slim $250
PS5 Pro $350

and with the Nintendo Switch at $300..

if the Scorpio coming out at $500+ price tag.. eh.. it will be tough to sell

console gamers are not pc gamers.. Microsoft should realize it by now..

Sony learned the lesson with their $600 ps3 at lauch.. which is why they are keeping new systems at $400.. it seems like a sweet price price to start at -- $400 and under..

I agree 100% with your view on Scorpio. It'll be a nice novelty item for the million diehard Microsoft fans but it won't have much appeal beyond that.

The Switch...will sell to Nintendo fans and that's it. At least until they kill off 3DS+2DS and drop the Switch price to around those levels. Which might not happen that quickly with 3DS coming off a strong year.

So that means PS4 will be the de facto console for all the major publishers which means tons of software late in life. Once they leave a system the sales suffer.

People in other regions might be buying up used PS3s but sales of new ones have slowed to a trickle even in Japan. I was hoping for a long tail like the PS2 so it could make it to 100 million but after the PS4's successful release that changed everything.

The PS4 had a rough start in Japan but the sales have been growing ever since. Overall PS4 had a better 2016 than 2015 but only just. 3 years into its life it's still waiting for major franchises like GTA, Resident Evil and Gran Turismo. Once those drop sales could pick up again in the West.

Like the PS2 the PS4 is the dominant console of its gen. Unlike the PS2 the PS4 has to contend with Steam and mobile for the attention of hardcore and casuals alike. The big question would be if the PS5 is easy to work with like the PS4 is. Devs were slow jump onto the PS3 and fast to jump off.

the PS5 probably will have BC.. so you can play your PS4 games on it.. and probably will be priced at $400 again..

nintendo is moving over into the group of mobile gaming now with their switch

6.2 in and it's only 720p.. my nexus 6 is 5.96in. and it's 1440p.. i got it new for $200 on black friday 2015

the video they showed.. the graphic/quality looks kind of bland to me..

i started out with the NES.. also own the Gameboy Advance.. but after that nintendo systems hold no interest for me anymore..

the only games that i want from nintendo now a day would be Fatal Frame and Bayonetta (they bought these IPs and made them exclusively to nintendo only).. other than those two games i don't see a lot of games that i would want to play..

i'm not a fan of GTA or Gran Turismo to be honest. i played those games before but was not interested in them..

i do play Resident Evil but RE7 is meh in my opinion.. i think they are too focus on VR for RE7

I'm also a God of War fan but their recent game look like the other hack WRPG.. i don't see any combos what so ever ?..

this is the thing.. when you are changing the gameplay of long running series you will turn away old fans as you are trying to attract new ones..

with the march 3, 2017? release date.. i wonder if the PS4 and PS4 Pro or the Xbox One S will drop down in price .. to compete against the Switch.. if not at least to retain the market share

imo.. nintendo games should be $30-$40... not $50-$60 like PS4 and Xbox one..
