We have multiple TVs in this house

I heard of this device, Kill a Watt, so i ordered one
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Kill-A-Watt-Electricity-Monitor-P4400/202196386

i got it today so i was curious to see how much electricity each tv will use

65" 2016 LCD-LED TV uses 36W
48" 2012 LCD-LED TV uses 56W
32" 2010 LCD TV uses 70W
27" 2005 CRT tv uses 110W

it's a good thing we don't use the 32" and 27" anymore (they were in storage).. i think it's time to sell both of them.. probably the 48" too

even my PS3 super slim uses about 75W when playing physical games.. so the 65" uses only 36W is pretty nice

TVs are getting cheaper, bigger, better quality yet more energy efficient as well. .. (i paid about $200 less for the 65" compare to the 48" back then )

I don''t have any plasma in this house.. i heard they use a lot of power.. would love to know the Wattage plasma will use with the Kill a watt meter..

i don' know if anyone out there still use CRT tv though.. might as well donate it or recycle the thing..

My Panasonic Viera 3D LED/LCD TV is quite EnergyStar rated, thank you.

(And seriously--You gave up on 3D because you didn't like the games?? )

i didn't talk about 3D here..is this from another thread..

the 48in is the 3D tv

i gave up on 3D because of lack of contents..

don't have any 3D movies.. i bought the 3D tv because i was hyped by Sony with their 3D gaming. which was short lived too if i put all the hours i used 3D feature i would say 50 hours? after 4+ years owning the tv .. it's not worth it for me

now they are trying to hype me with virtual reality-- forget it i'll not follow the hype train this time

A 55" Samsung LCD-LED 3D TV. Not sure of its exact power consumption, but U.S. Dept. of Energy specs rate my particular model at 97 kWh per year.

I don't have a straight-up electricity monitor, however my PC is on an uninterruptible power supply that can tell me what the current load is (among other things). Right now, under fairly minimal load (several browsers, dozens of tabs, email client, word processor.. What? I'm a multi-tasker...) my PC & monitor are using 70-75 Watts.

There are other devices plugged in as well though, so it's not perfectly accurate.

With TVs, part of the efficiency jump is from LED backlighting - they used to use a fluorescent tube. CRT and Plasma are both power-hogs from what I know/hear. OLED, which is still kind of on the cusp of hitting the market, should be a bit more power efficient than LCD if I recall correctly.

For the good of the environment you should recycle the 32" and 27" instead of letting them suck up energy at someone else's house

if only the tech zombies also have the same mindset when they traded in that $700-$900 phone to get another $700-$900 phone every single year..

the thing with recycle electronics is this

PBS NewHour link

Watchdog group tracks what really happens to your ‘recycled’ e-waste
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sUT1u4WMP4

also those early model of 4K tvs use more energy than the CRTs.. the same models they are selling on black friday and cyber monday this year..

recycle is the last resort for me-- unless no one wants them

You people must live in big houses... I have a 60" and there's little point in me getting 4K because I'm sitting 8 feet away.

But yeah, recycling isn't always recycling. The waste company that handles my house garbage has e-waste recycling (have to personally bring the stuff, and hand-register them) but who knows how good of a job they do.

The Kill-a-watt is super cool. I got one about a year ago. I got it to make sure I didn't overload the circuit, but it ended up being more fun than work. Yes I measured the output of my air conditioner at different speeds for fun. Don't judge me.

My TV is a Vizio 32 inch. Nothing fancy.
