Just wondering how a show ends up being 35+ episodes, as opposed to the usual 12 episode format. Do some shows go in with a higher budget and thus can continue to produce episodes beyond the usual 12, why is the 12 format the standard in the first place?

In a nutshell, it's the decision of the production committee.

I am an old-timer and even though anime in the late 80's - through early 2010's a lot of anime were 24 EPS as the norm compasred to now ..

Tes the Production CnT decicdes but this a newer trend( 12 ) which I really dont like It rushes things and you are left hanging > there ae still exceptions .

It seems only shounen shows are favored nowadays. Most of them get 100+ episodes.

I miss a good shoujo anime with 100+ episodes like Candy candy. Now everything except shounen is so short we barely get a good story and character development. There are exceptions like Yuri on Ice
