Christmas is a time where i get free gifts and time off from work.. so i'm looking forward to it each day.. i don't know what people call it

Happy Christmas or Merry Christmas or whatever

but happy holidays? which holiday they are referring to ?

maybe people are too dumb now a day to even know which specific holidays will fall in the months of October-January

so they will just say happy holiday to avoid make a mistake of not knowing or something?

this is like a player who will call the girls he is going out with "Honey" instead of their individual name..

why? because he doesn't remember/know their names.. so "honey" is the best term to use to avoid a mix up

so if someone you date is calling you "honey" instead of your name.. there might be some red flags there..

so if some said "happy holidays".. i would say.. "which holiday?"

at least be specific.. since some might look at it that these people don't even know which holiday is which ..

Happy Holidays is sort of a blanket statement. Since Hanukkah takes places over several days and Christmas is so close to New Years. If they are doing it to provoke a reaction then I'd say Merry Christmas back to them. But it really only makes sense to say it for two days. Eve and Day.

I celebrate Christmas, but I recognize that not everyone does. So I usually say "Happy Holidays" because that covers everything. Unless they say "Merry Christmas" first, then I'll just say that. I don't know why people feel the need to make such a big deal out of it.

Getting worked up because someone doesn't know/assume your holiday(s) of preference sounds like a big waste of energy.

This is truly the thing I care the most about in all the world.

*cough*

Though, in all seriousness, I never once thought of "Happy Holidays" as a PC substitute for "Merry Christmas" until I entered this topic.

Here's how I try to explain it. When most people I see say "Happy Holidays" it also includes New Years, as both occur within one week of the other. My interpretation of this came from a christmas card that I read once.

Basically, I really don't care. I don't celebrate the pagan holiday of Saturnalia, so people can say whatever they want.

Or it appears that the known world is largely non-christian. I love how cute you are each and every day though Mr.Oak.

I live in the United States. The major holidays in the United States are Christian holidays. Over the last decade and a half (give or take a few years), the PC Police have been systematically stamping out our American traditions. To be sure, other religious holidays are observed, but the major holidays have been the Christian ones, I speak from that stand point.

It may be that you are too young to have seen the changes that I speak of, or that you don't even live in the United States, which explains your lack of knowledge of American traditions that have been steadily observed up until 15 years, or so, ago.

to be honest this whole "war on christmas" the united states has developed over the years is so ridiculous no matter which side of it you look at because you only ever see the extremes of it.

I mean it's a "season of giving," just be kind, you don't need to be religious to at least understand that

say merry christmas or happy holidays, the only people who care and get offended by either are the people you shouldn't be around lmao

This only matters to people who have been told by the media that it matters. The topic is practically designed to polarize people - and thus to get people to pay attention to the story, so that the media gets more money. That is all this is really about. And so I wish this particular disagreement would die in a fire.
