I think the one who invites to the date should be prepared to pay for both, and then the invited should, out of courtesy, offer or better, insist, to pay for half. I feel like that's just the most polite and courteous thing for both to do,

The one who did the inviting should pay for the one being invited out.

So Japanese style, then?

Nah, I've always been the one to pay on the first date. Maybe it's an antiquated logic but I'm usually the one asking someone out - which means the onus of responsibility is on me. But that's not to say that I wouldn't allow a female to pay or split the check, just not something that concerns me either way, if they want to contribute, financially, to the first date - so be it.

The women should pay first since chivalry is dead and feminism is on the rise or how about each person just pay for their own meal food for thought

Get creative and find a way to make the date free for both of you. A beautiful view and some conversation w/ no interruption can go a long way.

Half n half as it would be sexist to pay for a women. Unless shes a stunning PYT out of your leauge and younger than you. Then the man should pay, it would be worth it.

Either pay for your own meal, or do half and half.

Well you could save money by NOT dating, so that'd be a better option.
