is it technically insulting to be told you have more intelligence than common sense?

Umm I don't care. Common sense is form from experience. I believe is common sense to assume some people will lack that kind of experience.

Both intelligence and 'common sense' are subjective. Common sense is defined by the person using it at the time and their cultural boundaries so basically they're just saying "you don't follow my social norms and that is a problem.", take that for what you will.

Just don't get insulted. Easy.

Had a mother tell a girl to not grow up like me (I was helping keep a friend of families store open as they visited China for their family). I just laughed and said to the kid "Yea, don't go to college for a BS in Geology like me. Don't go for your masters either. Only one semester left and look at me! You should become a welder!" Probably shouldn't have done it... but the mother looked like a fish out of water.

Got a nice tip with an apology too. People just like to insult others. If you don't get insulted from it... They loose all the power they tried to grab with it. I don't see how people get insulted so easily.

It's only insulting to be told about your strengths and weaknesses if you're insecure.

I don't see why either would be insulting.

If someone says that to you are being told you are smart yet an idiot/ignorant
That would only insult me if the person telling me I respected.

1. An intelligent man may decide to walk through Detroit in KKK Robes to study the psychological effects of the experience for his thesis. One with common sense would realize it's a very, very bad idea.

2. An intelligent man may walk into a job interview and inform the interviewer that he's considering taking the job (not even offered to him yet) even though he finds it beneath him. One with common sense will know exactly when to keep his mouth shut.

3. An intelligent man may invent a device that would destroy the entire World just to see if he could. One with common sense would sabotage the project before it got off the ground.

Howard Hughes was considered a very intelligent man. To make a movie (The Conquerer) quicker and more cost effective they filmed at a former nuclear testing site. The movie bombed and the site is believed to have caused the cancer most of the cast and crew (including John Wayne) died from over the years.

Those are just some examples of why common sense is a valuable commodity to have.

Just call the police

or better yet tell your mother, she'll take care of everything.

Seriously though, you can read that statement many ways and it depends on the situation.

Example is if a foreigner said it, they might've meant to say something like 'You're smarter than the average person'.

Insult or not, it isn't that insulting so if it's meant as one.. well, it's no good.
