Ya it's good that the staff have been disappointed with the results as well and even the candidates. I really don't know what they were thinking initally with having those judges pick everything and I also hear some judges' suggestions were denied which is strange... the whole thing just kind of seemed like a mess.

Yeah. Glass Reflection has been very clear with who he nominated and how so many of them got turned down. He was even shocked that Kabaneri was nominated for so much. He was especially salty with how Mumei kept getting on these lists. At least we know we can't blame him for whatever possessed these people to pick the same 5 shows over and over again and reject everything else.

Btw, I've been trying to look for these suspicious tumblr campaigns for YOI and I don't know if I'm really finding them but I did find this:
http://yuri-on-ice.tumblr.com/post/155346892303/crunchyroll-anime-awards-2016
http://all-animes-loy.tumblr.com/post/155330700928/crunchyroll-anime-awards-2016
That particular post got 10,000+ notes, and if most of those people voted and knew how to cheat... man, certainly the polls would be swayed big time.

I've never bothered looking.

To be fair both kabaneri and my hero academia are not that great.

Neither was Erased. Nor Joker Game. YoI is okay (currently watching it), but not AoTY material. I haven't seen the aforementioned Boku no Hero nor Kabaneri but I've heard people say they're lackluster.

the real shocker is that they didn't put shows like 91 Days on there, or any of the other titles that're, you know, actually decent (hell, Bungou Stray Dogs would've sufficed, for crying out loud), and that Rakugo polled so lowly.

All I hear about Re;Zero is that the MC is a wuss factory and it sucks, I've barely seen any of it, but yeah, the MC seems like the typically whiny male protagonist who can't do shit, and those are the types I despise. The wide eyed idealists certainly aren't my cup of tea but nothing stops me from wanting to punch Subaru in his derpy looking face the moment I see it.

With the results of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election, did you really think that 2016 was going to be the best year for Anime Awards?

Good comparison considering the winners of both things have no business being there, had little decent opposition, the GOOD choice wasn't even nominated like it was supposed too, and the diehard supporters of the thing that won are loud, obnoxious and ignorant

These awards are worded in a way of which the community believes it's based on the merit of each animation and I believe next years awards should be worded differently. Since this was conducted as a poll in the CR community, the wording should be changed to fit a popularity poll. Words such as favorite, most watched, or something similar to these words. And Awards seem as though it's official while it was based on popular vote. It should just be CR's Most Popular Animes of 2016.

Critiques I respect: YOI doesn’t deserve the title of best animation because the animation was flawed and inconsistent and still frames don’t equate to animation. Also, having a scene that depicts an abused child experiencing love and care for the first time, in my opinion, is a more heartwarming scene than a kiss. Overall, I believe that the listings were biased, but it’s all for fun anyway, so there shouldn’t be any hard feelings about it.

Critiques I DON’T respect: Yuri on Ice doesn’t deserve any award because it’s an overrated anime that’s only yaoi bait for fujoshi. It’s a shit anime and I don’t get why people hype it so much. The only reason why it’s popular was because it was gay and that’s it.

TL;DR: Some of ya'll need to chill. It was a popularity contest and the fans have spoken. Also, all of them salty people complaining about YOI winning specifically because it's gay and featured a same-sex relationship need to chill and need to be forcibly removed from the anime community.

People are pushed into Category 2 by a Category you missed:

Fans (predominantly female) who attack anyone that says any criticism towards YoI. Example I just got called homophobic because I said the animation is poor.

Do I think YoI deserves no awards? I think it deserves some, I can give it Best Couple and Best OP (Although I am still fighting a little for MP100 in that one). It certainly isn't Best Animation, MP100 wins that by a country mile but Flip Flappers could contend.

Do I think YoI is yaoi bait? I think less so than something like Free! (vomits) but certainly there is content aimed at appealing to fujoshis, the hot tub nude scene is a perfect example of this.

If YoI hadn't won Best Animation I don't think there would be half the hostility there currently is in this thread.

People aren't even necessarily hating on YoI but more the Tumblr fandom which would ruin the Anime Awards for everyone else by cheating the ballots with IP Spoofing.

I understand your arguments and they are definitely valid. As a YOI I think it shows how much a person like/respects/enjoys the show if they are able to admit and identify the flaws it has, animation and plot included. MP100 and Flip Flapper DID have superior animation quality and Kayo's scene WAS heartwarming.

However, in terms of people ragging on the show, I'll have to respectfully disagree with you. YOI and its fans have gotten a lot of hate over this and a lot of blanket statements have been thrown around on a number of platforms. Some people did get mad because they automatically assumed that all YOI fans just voted blind and didn't watch any of the other shows on the listing and this just isn't true. I watched Mob, I watched Erased and read the manga, I watched maybe 17 eps of Re:Zero before I got bored, I watched Kabaneri, I watched Boku no Hero and am currently reading the manga etc.

They also accused the everyone in the fandom of IP Spoofing, which I can honestly say I didn't even know was a thing until someone brought it up after the fact. I didn't do it and neither did any of the other people know who voted. I'm not saying that everyone didn't do it, but not everyone DID.

I said some people needed to chill because their valid critiques turn into just blind, unsupported hate when they start throwing around terms like "shit show" and "annoying fandom." I want to see people address each other respectfully and understand that there are outliers. There were even people shitting on Kubo-sensei and Yamamoto (creator and director of YOI), which is completely disrespectful and unjustified. I stop caring about people's feelings and arguments when they start throwing overly negative comments when they're mad. This includes YOI fans when they start calling people homophobes for not liking YOI, which is not always true.

All in all, the listings were bias and people shouldn't blame YOI fans for that or blame them for voting for the show they like. I'm sure that other people would've done the same thing if they bothered to rally other fans to vote as enthusiastically. Who people SHOULD be pissed at, in my opinion, is CR for supplying a short, lackluster option pool that didn't represent all the great anime that came out in 2016.

I wonder how the results would vary if we would do the same awards show in a year's time.

Personally, I doubt anyone did IP spoofing to futz the awards, but just because you didn't know what it was, and your group of friends didn't know, doesn't mean it didn't happen. Since these awards don't mean anything except what some people liked I doubt anyone would go to the lengths it would require to fix an election through hacks. I could see vote brigading though.

Though, it's a popularity contest, so all it shows is what the vast majority of fans feel. And I think the final outcome is a good representation of how people felt this year (including, or especially including, how YoI gets a pass seemingly because it's an alright anime that's laser targeted on female fans who don't get as much fanservice as the men).

I liked YoI personally, but I also really liked Kabaneri, and as far as I'm concerned they're two sides of the same coin. But then again, I've been watching anime for decades and there's always been large groups of people who like thing X more than thing Y for trashy or flimsy reasons. I know I REALLY got into Thunderbolt Fantasy, but I'd be lying to myself if I thought it deserved any spots on this list, much like YoI. People aren't mad that YoI got nominated, because it should've been. They're mad that it swept the awards, when objectively it didn't. Throw in the fact that people who are of that opinion expected it would sweep anyway and you've got the situation we're in now.

Personally I would've been just as not-surprised but still hateful of anime fans of Re:Zero also swept. Which is what I expected before YoI appeared.

And just like that, the Worst Girl 2016 wins the prize, because people liked the show she was in and felt sorry for her. It also didn't help that the Judges were all buffoons, and nominated the Main Character or Main Love Interest from the other shows that were nominated, and not the actual Best Girls on those shows. I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.

It saddens me that many people (men especially) are being rude to YOI fans and calling us all "fusjoshi yaoi lovers". You men will always disregard animes like YOI and Free! because of this stupid mentality.

We can never have good things and enjoy them without having the same annoying otaku bois shitting on us.

Honestly no surprise yuri on Ice won a good sum of them but honestly they should've spread out the nominations as it seems like the awards show just knew it was gonna happen they were gonna win and didn't care. (Speaking from someone who watched it; it's bland.) And how the hell did they win best ending? Like seriously I could make a slideshow like that outta Windows Live Movie Maker and some music I find from whatever's in '2016 EDM music'. The ending just feels half-assed to me considering how it's just still pictures and transitions...just boring and something you'd watch out of a quincenera or something that people vaguely watch as it's in the background but get sick of after the third time it's played.

Please do it. Let's see if you can make a song as beautiful as that one. The song goes beautifully with the pictures, the pictures are from their Instagram accounts and that makes it unique. It deserved to win that award! (I'll be waiting for your video )

Wow, this award is litterally one sided with Yaoi on ice winning. It shows exactly what demographics are voting in droves. If they were to throw in a yuri show, I bet you anything that anyone voted for it will be called "pervs". Yaoi on ice is just utter garbage, mars of destruction is way better.

This is the type of attitude I'm referring about.

YOI is not yaoi on ice or fujoshi on ice. You clearly didn't even watch the anime because YOI is not yaoi.

Most of the people who are against YOI winning didn't even watch the anime, I know many who did and enjoyed it and still didn't like the results but the majority are only shitting on YOI because of the close relationship between the two male characters. That's bigotry because you only care about "yaoi" and fujoshi and disregard the beautiful story and characters.

Eh, these sorts of contests are popularity contests so these results are definitely expected. Though I think people have to give props to YoI for reaching people beyond the anime community, because it definitely did that when you look at the votes. That in itself is a valid reason for YoI being AotY, though my vote went to SGRS. And if Crunchyroll wanted to look specifically at the anime community then they probably have to go about this differently next year.

Like a previous comment, chill and please stop assuming that because YoI won in huge margins it was because of cheating. I won't deny that it's a possibility, but if you look at the YoI fandom, it's also a possibility that they really got out the vote for all the categories it was in. (It'll probably be difficult to find out one way or another, but it did happen to SGRS on ANN last Winter but then was resolved.)

Also like others have said, sad that Sound Euphonium 2 wasn't a choice for best animation because it definitely deserved that. I do kinda wish there was a best art style category since I feel like people confuse that with best animation a lot. At least Deku got best hero.

I agree with everything you said.

I don't know why everyone is so mad? YOI was the MOST popular anime in 2016 so it was meant to happen. YOI's blu ray DVDs was #1 on sales in Japan, that shows how popular it is.

Are otaku bois seriously saying that fans cheated to make YOI the winner? LOL LOL LOL LOL

(for those who say that only people's opinions with premium accounts matter, my account was premium when I watched YOI, I don't pay premium anymore because I have nothing to watch anymore, if YOI gets a 2nd season and CR gets it again, I will pay for premium again )

I think if there is ever another anime awards maybe have more of a variety? it seemed like one anime series was in about 80% of the categories and then people feel like the anime they voted for was robbed because one anime dominated them all because its popular. I also watch k dramas and even soompi awards for the dramas had more of a variety and we get to vote and there isn't one drama in almost all the categories. Just my opinion though. I am not complaining about the results it just seems like Yuri on Ice was in too many categories.

What categories do you think it shouldn't be in?

There is a lot of salt in this thread
