Hey Everyone! Crunchyroll is excited to announce its first ever Anime Awards! We’re taking a look back at the best shows, characters and moments from the anime we watched and loved in 2016, and we want YOU, the passionate anime community, to join us!

Over the past few months, we’ve worked with a panel of independent judges to help select nominees for each of our 14 awards categories. On January 3rd, anime fans across the globe can vote at theanimeawards.com for their top picks. There’s plenty of time over the holidays to catch up on any of the shows you’ve missed, so you can decide who deserves to take home the awards.

We’ll announce the winners on theanimeawards.com and on Crunchyroll’s social media on January 10th - saving our biggest award, Anime of The Year, to be announced live from the Crunchyroll Anime Awards Party in San Francisco on January 28. We’ll be sharing more information regarding the party soon, so stay tuned to see how you can celebrate an amazing year in anime with your fellow fans and the Crunchyroll team.

Get over to theanimeawards.com, check out the nominees, and prepare to make anime history!

Judges:
Miranda Sanchez - Editor at IGN Entertainment
LeSean Thomas - Animation producer, director (The Boondocks & Black Dynamite), creator of Crunchyroll’s upcoming project Children of Ether
Xavier Woods - WWE superstar and known anime-lover, aka Austin Creed
Matt Schley - Otaku USA Magazine
Yomimaid - Event Chair at San Francisco Anime Festival & Cosplay
Tristan Gallant - Glass Reflection
Lauren Orsini - Otaku Journalist

I would strongly suggest to add an "Other:" option to each category. Or completely separate the panel vote from the audience/fan vote. It doesn't make sense for the panel to select their choices and force fans to select from that group for each category. There's a lot of anime titles no listed on each category that I'd prefer over the ones that are there.

If you guys want to do this right and get it's full potential as an event for the fans, give the fans full choice of what they find best for each category.

People are getting so fired up, but it's just a popularity vote... the nominations make sense in a "let's go with what's popular so people will vote" way. Fan voting never holds much credibility to begin with. The results will show popularity, not what's objectively best.

More concerned the artist isn't even credited right for "ninelie" under the "closing" category...

I am super excited, yet kind of disappointed. March Comes in Like a Lion should have gotten at least ONE nomination. I thought it would be in Best Drama or SOMETHING.

I really hope the March Comes In Like a Lion gets some type of recognition, even if it doesn't win anything, it deserves a nomination.

To be completely honest, that is a pretty terrible shortlist.

Where the hell is Jojo. Anime of the year easily, it was a complete blast to watch compared to some of that garbage.

We of /r/Megumin are met with slight disappointment.

Anyway I appreciate the emphasis there on the studio and director. More emphasis on more credits is appreciated since it's otherwise not always easy to note.

I don't have any ideas on how to run a popularity contest any better, so I look forward to the voting period in the meantime.

Really disappointing nomination line ups. To be frank I do not even know why some of the nominees have nominations when there are other better choices for the categories. Literally the Best OP and CS are pure garbage nominations ( MY OPINION) one full year of anime and the choices are pretty much only from the last two seasons AOTY, is purely mainstream anime it couldnt even look for hidden gems. God im frustrated, please just scrap the awards, and re do everything. Its not like voting started yet.

you basically have the same 4 shows in every category, doesn't seem fair to have shows thats not seen on CR ahead of ones people are paying for. How can I vote for ones that I haven't had an opportunity too see or vote against the ones I have, that I think is good.

Can't wait to see Gundam get robbed Best Fight. The clip doesn't include the start since it cuts to another scene. Also disappointed Love Live! Sunshine!! wasn't nominated for anything.

only 4 animes per category. That's very short. I think some good anime are missing. or maybe it was only the one that started this year.

Why isn't the fight between All Might and Nomu listed instead of the fight between Midoriya and Bakugo? to me it was clearly the best fight of My Hero Academia's first season.
