When I was younger, I actually asked my parents if they lied about our ethnicity, and my dad slapped the shit out of me lmfao.

Well at one point in time the people who settled in China also crossed the frozen ocean to get to Japan. Korea was pretty much a puppet/pet of China for much of history. During the mongol invasions large numbers of Chinese moved to Vietnam so you took over their gene pool too.

slants eyes? I saw one person who review anime get kinda trigger by that.
I think the movie they were reviewing was Spriggan.

Idk somehow it's their stereotype. So they now all have slanty eyes.

Its kind of like trying to tell the difference between white American and white European.

I'm sure there are some differences between Italian and french people, but sometimes it can be confusing.

It really should be easier than that!

I wouldn't even try guessing a Caucasian-looking person's ethnic background.

The American weighs 300 lbs, is diabetic, and has pop in one of their hands. Could also be on a hoverround and picking up stuff with an arm extender with a gun strapped to the side.

Yes that is our stereotype and it is so full of freedom it brings a tear to my eye, that or I'm having a stroke.

I'm part Japanese, Korean, and Chinese Indonesian. Apparently I look like neither one because I don't have slanted eyes.. When I'm in Japan I get mistaken for a Korean, when I'm in Korea I get mistaken for a Japanese, and people in Indonesia always mistaken me for either a Japanese, Korean, or Chinese. I live in the US, here I get mistaken for Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, etc... any Asian ethnicity, you name it...

Hm If you call Kenneth Cole jacket plus regular blue jeans "Japanese"

My wife wears her own style combination, but I don't think it's Korean by any means. She did buy a coat in Japan but that was just last month...

Exactly, you've got a guy who's on an anime forum so he may very well like to wear Japanese things. If his wife likes to keep up with the latest fashion trends in Asia, then there's a high chance she will be wearing Korean styles.

Nopers... I wear American brands and so does my wife.

Opening post really needed some pictures so we could decide for ourselves.

I think most of the time Asians are fairly distinguishable from each other. Maybe it's possible in the OP's example that they like to wear fashions more associated with being Japanese or Korean?

Oh no I am not going to post our pics on the internets for all to see... The last time I did it I only put the smallest of the small picture so that the faces could just barely be seen. When I posted my vacation pics I had a big smiley face covering my face... I just don't feel very comfortable showing those to people I don't know.

Do one of those genetic test kits, bet you're more mixed than you think- we all are (unless you are descended from some super isolated tribe) and all families have secrets-- some of it shit that had to be done/was done at the time (war, loneliness etc)

Previously, I've always been a firm believer in the falsehood of the adage:

"All Asians look a like" ("Asians" here implies East Asian, of that great vague swath of earth called East Asia)

Now, I'm not so sure. Perhaps all (East) Asians are just (East) Asians because well, they're (East) Asians.

It all started when my wife got mistaken by Koreans at Korean restaurants as a Korean. Koreans start to talk to my wife in Korean. They never spoke to me, much less in Korean... and I get to laugh at her expense later by making up jokes about how she should star in a K-Drama about a girl who accidentally went from rags to riches, or a K-Drama about a clueless girl who ended up solving a big mystery case, or a K-Drama about pretty much any random female protagonist involved in a silly romcom plot.

She got her revenge when it was time for us to go to Japan. The people at the ANA counter at the airport started greeting me in Japanese, the ANA air stewardesses on the plane greeted me in Japanese (while only nodding and smiling at my wife, who is "Korean".....) That was before even leaving San Francisco. Then my wife got to laugh her head off at my expense, speaking mockingly in faux Japanese at me and nodding and bowing, then making up some story about me being a prince in the Japanese royal family that got abandoned somewhere etc etc etc

Ok. I'm Chinese. So is my wife. I don't see how either of us look anything but Chinese (actually I'm not sure how "Chinese" I look but I am dead sure it's anything but Japanese). HOWEVER, to other people, I'm Japanese and she's Korean.

There was this one time when I went to a hair salon and this Taiwanese girl was shocked when she finished cutting my hair and I spoke Mandarin Chinese to her. "I thought you're Japanese", she said. At the time I thought she just needed to have her eyes checked; either that or she doesn't know what a Japanese guy looks like.

Guess not. Japanese people somehow think I look Japanese too. That, creates some awkward situations in Japan.

Japanese person: [begins speaking Japanese to me, and only me. Not to my "Korean" wife]

Me: [responds with broken Japanese with shite grammar]

Japanese person: [awkward momentary silence, then caters to my demands because even though my Japanese is shite, it was still borderline understandable]

Me: Arigatou gozaimasu!

Yeah. Lesson: Asians probably just looks Asian, except the ones that look Korean which a Japanese wouldn't automatically speak Japanese to, and the ones that look Japanese which a Korean wouldn't automatically speak Korean to. It's that simple.

I studied in japanese history that there are basically two ethic groups: one from china and the other a group that was already in japan before the chinese came. this group, in looks has darker shin, rounder eyes, and broader features. in the case of korea, a long time ago a group of chinese people did settle in korea as well.

Well, the name was that of a small country which perished in the Spring-Autumn period, those with the name were descendants of that royal family. Later on there were other non-Han people such as the Manchus who took on the name as a badge of honor (e.g. bestowed upon families of fallen generals) so there are possibilities. However, the old registry did state that my grandfather is from the region which the name originated.

I am Filipino and while I was stationed in Japan, there were a couple instances where I was mistaken as being Okinawan.

Then when I visited the Philippines, there were multiple times when the locals would think I was Chinese.

I couldn't believe it when I heard it, but I was adopted and I would not be surprised if I am a mutt.

I had to look up the Spring summer period-Equivalent to Zhou-I have *very* basic eastern history knowledge, so happy to learn more.(thus your name would thus be one of the 148 states that were absorbed, lol)

As this is circa 771-675 BC can you assume no other histories occurred in your family since then?

Personally I don't find anything funny about inter-dynastic violence.

There's a village in the area bearing the same name. My father told me that those in that village weren't allowed to marry inside the village (because everyone are related) and had to go outside to find anyone to marry. So, I could assume at least that part.

My grandmother took my father and my aunts to Taiwan to get away from the invading Japanese soldiers before they got to Shanghai..

I've said all I've got to say on the matter. You can take it or leave it from there. You can doubt all you want. At this point I don't care what you think should you choose to disrespect.
