Hello!

I'm looking for recommendations for an oddly specific type of show. I don't think I've seen any show like this, yet for some reason, I feel certain that it exists.

I'll list some of the things I feel like this show would have

1. A duo (or larger cast) of cute girls that isn't a romance or harem
2. Loosely episodic in nature
3. Focus on some sort of occupation or "persistent activity"
4. In my head, the show has the feeling and art style of an older show, even though I haven't seen many of them.

But what I'm not looking for is ordinary CGDCT. I'm on a quest to watch all of those, but it's not what I'm looking for here.

In my head, two scenarios come to mind that could serve as examples.

Example 1:
An older show about a group of cute girls working as police officers in a contemporary or sci-fi setting

Example 2:
A comedy about a group of cute girls doing some cross country or intergalactic rode trip or adventure.

I think a show with a feeling vaguely similar to what I'm looking for is Excel Saga, but that's not quite it, as Excel Saga felt too "random" and less "persistent" and down to earth than what I'm looking for.

A close example would be a show I recently finished called Kokoro Library. In terms of the feel of the show, I think this is quite close, but not quite so laid back. More hyperactive and fun rather than sentimental and introspective like Kokoro Library is. I love it for that just like I love Aria, but it's not quite what I'm looking for here.

Highly vague, but if you have any suggestions, they're more than welcome. The less romance the better, but if there are slight amounts, I might be able to stomach it.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think I can hit what you're going for, but I'll give it a shot.

Read or Die
Noir
Higurashi, though it's not really episodic
Railgun?

The rest of these are entirely hearsay (sorry I haven't watched them so I can't say for sure), but they sound like they could be up your alley.

Madlax
El Cazador
Michiko and Hatchin
Bubblegum Crisis (maybe)

Your first example is an almost perfect match for this show from the 90's.

You're Under Arrest!

A show similar to your second example is

The Rolling Girls

Thanks so much for the responses, everyone!

Actually, I've already seen all of Aria and it's currently my all time favorite series

It really is an amazing show. Although, I was looking for something a bit more... hmm... "energetic"?

But I feel like Aria needs to be recommended far more often. Doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

Noir and Read or Die both sound interesting and kind of similar to what I'm looking for, I think I'll check those out.

Not sure about Higurashi, but I have heard recommendations for it in different contexts which have put it on my radar anyway. I might try that at some point.

Railgun I've already seen, actually, and I really loved it! I think that's a good modern example of what I'm looking for. Imagine if Kuroko had a spin-off about her exploits in Judgement. That's like exactly what I want

All the ones you haven't watched actually sound really close to what I'm looking for. My only reservation is that some sound like they might be more serious than I'm expecting. Despite that, I think I'll have to check out at least an episode of all of them. Much obliged for these picks.

You're Under Arrest literally sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. "Lighthearted police drama" is what got me. I feel like this might be it, honestly. Almost as though it were pulled straight out of my head

I've also seen Rolling Girls as well, and that was my AOTY for 2015. Totally forgot about that, but another perfect modern example.

I've seen Haibane Renmei and absolutely loved it! Like Aria, it's another show that deserves more recognition! Also like Aria, it's a bit slow and introspective. Actually, I'd say the feel of it is completely unique. Not sure I've ever seen another show quite like it.

This also sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. Another show I'll have to check out

Again, thanks so much guys. I honestly didn't expect to get so many recommendations! I'm almost certain what I'm looking for might be here, and I have a lot of shows to add to my watch list as well. My ever growing, seemingly never ending watch list

Once again, thanks for the responses!

Honestly, Gunsmith Cats just sounds freakin' cool. I feel like I should have watched this already. Heck, even the name sounds up my alley!

Many of your other picks also sound quite interesting. You know, I'm not new to anime by any stretch. In fact, I'd dare say that I might be in deeper than the average fan, but the sheer amount of stuff that exists means that I don't think anyone is truly familiar with everything. I had never heard of most of these picks, yet they all sound so intriguing.

I started out as an anime fan that often asked for recommendations. As time went on, I thought "I know what I like to watch - there's no longer any need to ask." And now that I'm even further along, I find that I've come full circle again and am discovering a great many new shows. It's both humbling and exciting.

I loved both Girls und Panzer and Ai Mai Mi! Rail Wars is a nice recommendation based on my criteria, although, I tried that when it aired and found that it wasn't quite for me. It did have interesting execution though.

Still need to watch the GuP movie at some point as well. Forgot about that. Seemed like people were going crazy for it, too.

This sounds extremely close to what I'm looking for as well. Definitely have to check this out. I think I've heard of this one before, too. I remember people praising it, which is always a good sign!

Once again, thanks you guys!

Like I said, I honestly only expected to get like 1 or 2 recommendations, so there's no way I'll be able,to try everything (since I have other shows to watch as well). But rest assured, almost all of these that I haven't seen are going straight into my backlog list of shows to try out, so I'm highly appreciative for all of them!

Yvw . While thinking about all the series that fit your criteria I forgot an important title that fits well but it's actually an anime movie not a series...

/cats-eye perhaps? It's not got much romance in it...although there is just a minimal amount, but it's mostly for comedic effect.

This looks intriguing. Kind of has an interesting mystery / sci-fi look I've not seen too often. I'll definitely keep this one in mind as well

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never watched a Kaito themed show (well, unless you count Milky Holmes). This seems like it would be an excellent foray into the genre for me, so I'll definitely keep this one on my radar. Plus I love the name

Sabagebu was an absolutely hilarious show - probably one of the stronger ones in terms of humor that resonates with me. I almost wish I hadn't seen it so that I could go watch it with this recommendation, but thanks for it regardless.

A Brief Update

So, I tried the first few episodes of Noir and found myself really enjoying it. It wasn't exactly what I was looking for (a bit more serious and mysterious in tone than what I really wanted), but even so, it had the essentials of what I asked for and was just really interesting overall. Thus, I think I'm probably going to stick with that one for now.

However, like I said earlier, many of these interesting recommendations are going into my backlog list of shows to try - and there are many that I'm actually really eager to try out upon finishing Noir (particularly Gunsmith Cats, You're Under Arrest, and Dirty Pair). Thus, I'm really appreciative for these recommendations, and if anyone else has any others, still feel free to post them!
