I know a lot of people are against it because of their personal health reasons (anxiety, etc), but it's somewhat unfair for people who actually find caffiene pretty helpful.

Trust me, there's much worse out there than a cup of coffee in the morning.

As for cigarettes, I think that would actually be a pretty wise move for the government to take, depending on whether or not people riot.

I would be glad if that happened because I can stop drinking caffeine and people who are addicted to smoking cigarettes can get off of them. But the companies that make cigarettes or caffeinated products will be screwed.

You have never been to Utah?

Or known any Mormons?

Personally I used to smoke two packs of Marlboro Reds a day, haven't missed it in the last twenty years. It makes the house, the car, and your clothes stink like a wet ashtray and your breath is only slightly less offensive than an outhouse on a hot summer day. So I'd probably chuckle a bit if they actually banned cigarettes...

(Yes, former smokers are the worst critics of smokers.)

Caffeine?
Hummm . . .
That might be a tough one.
That would mean no more coffee or any green or black tea . . . (Tea as opposed to herbal teas.)
I could drink Long Beach Iced Tea instead of Long Island Iced Tea . . ..
Seven-up is a decent mixer too....

Haaaaaaa!
Sorry, just remembering when I worked for a Mormon-owned company. It's policy was:

No Caffeine (soda/coffee)
No Smoking (cigarettes or otherwise)
No Liquor (of any kind)

This was an IT company.
I did not last long there. I broke the 'no caffeine and no liquor' policies. Got tired of them trying to criticize my personal life (they knew that I'd pop to Starbucks before going into work), so I ended up carrying in a Venti mocha and a bottle of beer. Sat down, chugged the beer, quietly sipped the mocha while working. HR asked me to leave 10 minutes later.

They can have my coffee when they pry it from my cold, dead hands.

I guess a lot of people would bootleg, because it would become so lucrative. Since organized crime is in the best position to do this, it would mostly enrich those people.

No alcohol during work is a pretty typical policy, but no caffeine? In a tech company? Or were they seriously criticizing you about off-hours activity?

If caffeine was banned, I'd start growing my own tea.

This is why I was laughing about the mentioning of Mormons.
In a Mormon-owned company, it's common for them to criticize your personal life. You're not allowed to consume liquor or caffeine in or outside of work (as per the lovely paperwork you sign that is considered their "Morality Agreement"). I had already been written up twice for having been caught at Starbucks by a co-worker (they took a photo and sent it to my supervisor), stating that I was violating said Morality Agreement.

When I spoke to my direct supervisor about these warnings, I was advised that the "Morality Agreement" that was signed was not exclusive to the workplace. I was not allowed to drink alcohol or consume caffeine in any way, shape, or form as long as I worked at the company. This is when I decided to just go full-out and waltzed in with booze and caffeine. Figured if I was going to go out, I was going out on my own terms.

I think banning coffee, tea, and other caffeinated drinks could cause people to riot in the streets, especially in the mornings, when the first thing people are craving is that first cup of coffee. But banning cigarettes? That could cause wars!!!

What are they trying to do?! Are they mad?!

Good thing, I don't drink coffee, nor smoke. So, I'm good, but I sure will miss my unsweetened iced tea.....
