The February 2017 issue of Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine is announcing on January 6 that an anime adaptation of Tomo Takeuchi's Welcome to the Ballroom (Ballroom e Yōkoso - Sweep Over the Dance Hall) manga has been green-lit.

Plot Summary

Feckless high school student Tatara Fujita wants to be good at something - anything. Unfortunately, he's about as average as a slouchy teen can be. The local bullies know this, and make it a habit to hit him up for cash, but all that changes when the debonair Kaname Sengoku sends them packing. Sengoku's not the neighborhood watch, though. He's a professional ballroom dancer. And once Tatara Fujita gets pulled into the world of the ballroom, his life will never be the same.

Hmm.. a ballroom dancing anime could be very cool, but I don't like that art style at all.

How did I miss that announcement? I was just talking to a friend the other day about how it would make a good anime. I found the manga a few weeks before it went on hiatus, due to the mangaka's health. I've been waiting for its return ever since! Happy to see that she has recovered and is back, and very excited about IG doing it.

The Manga is amazing, they have a great production studio so I am expecting a lot from this. It's going to be at the top of my list for this year.

I'm both excited and scared for this one. If it's done well (Production I.G. does very well with sports anime so I'm hopeful) I'm almost certain it will be anime of the year contender for sure. However, the manga has a very rough and intense style that may not translate well into anime. Moreover, dancing is very nuanced and can be easily ruined through soddy animation. On the other hand, with an exceptional budget and well-animated body movements for the dance scenes, this will be fantastic!

Damn, isn't it only a few volumes in? It seems pretty soon to be getting an anime already, unless I'm just flat out wrong. Nevertheless an anime adaptation seems like a good idea because the manga was pretty good but had a lot of trouble when it came to the actual dancing (though to be fair it's not an easy thing to convey a movement based artform in a non moving medium) so actually seeing it in motion will likely give us the definitive experience for the story. Production IG can animate really well too, so I have high expectations.

Production IG does a good job with fluid motions, when it's actual motion. Just hope they don't resort to too many still frames scrolling across the screen, as they did in Kuroko's.

I was thinking the same thing. I really enjoyed the manga and I'm looking forward to seeing the dance sequences being animated. I thought the manga did a pretty good job in conveying those sequences in a non moving medium, which is pretty admirable. The manga clearly is unique, as I've never seen professional dance being portrayed in a manga before and now that there's going to be an anime for it, we can expect great things, probably even the anime of the year.
