Boredom, mostly. Sometimes people infuriate/confound me to the point of triggering a response, though.

I don't know anyone that likes to talk about interesting things in real life so I just cast a line out here and hope for some fish

I started posting because I was bored. I also kind of wanted attention, I think: it's nice to see people respond to you. A couple times I'll post because something bothers me and I feel I need to correct it, but now my primary motivation is seeing what people will say and do. I'm social and have plenty of friends where I live, but we're all scientists. That makes it hard to get other perspectives - and scientists suck at more philosophical discussions (they just do not understand epistemology, and they don't want to). Here I have no idea what I'll get. Here no one is more prominent than anyone else. The internet is a wild ride - even here where it's relatively tame. I learn a lot hearing from all sorts of people and watching them react. And as stupid as things get here, I think it makes me feel better about humanity. We're certainly fascinating.

The other thing I want to do talking to people here is to get them to think about how the internet affects them.

Quora is way better for getting attention... People even request your answers. It's an even bigger waste of time than the bottomless rabbit hole that is Wikipedia.

CR is sometimes my outlet for annoyances. Issues that bugged me sometimes ended up here.

As for science and epistemology... Well, science only demands one kind and pretty much just one particular kind of epistemology. Others would be extraneous to what science does. When ignoring other kinds, scientists are just being efficient!

Yeah, I definitely don't do the internet correctly.

I remember talking to my ex-boyfriend (a biologist) about whether leaves had to be green, and he responded by saying that leaves have to be green because of the chemistry of chlorophyll and our eyes. When I tried to say that that was only a scientific explanation linking our understanding of light to the color green we perceive, and that there's a difference between the input and the perception, he kinda got mad and didn't understand. Sigh - though, if I'm being honest with myself, not surprising coming from a biologist.

Mostly because I don't have friends, who are much into anime, or at least not that much as I am, and it's nice to see the opinion of other people on some topics.

^This

I can also sort of relate to the OP's issue with being among only scientists. I'm an engineering graduate student and I have reached the point where I pretty much only have extensive conversations with other engineers. When I was an undergraduate, I would speak to people of different disciplines, but now I pretty much only talk to same type of person, who is either into similar hobbies or does something STEM-related.

Initially, I decided to become more active on CR because I don't have anyone in the real world to speak to about anime. But, I would like to meet people with different experiences and opinions, as well. lol It's a struggle though, since I also find conversations with drastically different people to be quite difficult at times.
