Why can't we normalize horseback riding and make it a mode of transportation again?

There's this whole problem with greenhouse gasses, and going green with transportation...so why can't we make it a normal thing to ride horses again? I mean, like for short distances...log distance commutes should be done by different means.
Think about it though...if this became a thing, more jobs would open up, because there would then be stables where people would take care of the horses while others are at work!
Also, horse manure is great for fertilizing crops!
I know it was stopped in the past because off terrible drainage systems, and not cleaning up the manure, so it would just pile up which led to lots of people getting sick...but this is the 21st century! Things have CHANGED!
Just imagine riding a horse to school...I mean, that would be the greatest...right?

Indeed, but there aren't nearly enough horses. Plus horses wouldn't be able to deliver as many goods as Diesel trucks can.

Using more public transportation or riding bikes would be a more ideal solution to reduce green house gases. Horses could be part of the solution though.

Two words: Horse Shit.
Plus where all the food for the horses come from? A horse eats a LOT in a single day, and the food has to come from somewhere.

Horse farts are like cow farts and destroy the planet.

You clearly don't live in a rural area. Although it's not a common sight, it's certainly not uncommon to find people riding horses or a horse-and-buggy. We even have street signs to designate where horses have the right of way.

It's very expensive to house and care for horses, and most modern living situations aren't suitable for keeping them. Were are apartment dwellers supposed to keep their horses? Are people with busy lifestyles going to want to invest all the time required? There's a lot of upkeep to horses as well.
Bikes and mass transit are much more practical, less expensive and better environmentally overall.

Why don't we use horses?
1. Horse Poop. Horses make A LOT of poop. Ever been to an area with a lot of horses? There is poop everywhere.
2. Not very fast. They can go fast over short distances, but realistically you are going about 6-8 km or 4 miles per hour.
3. Eat a lot. Horse need to eat a lot. Vegetables don't provide a lot of energy and horses are big so they need to eat a lot. Which leads to reason 1. This results in horses being very expensive to keep.
4. Horses are big. You need a rather large area to keep your horse. Not a lot of people have the space to keep a horse.
5. Horses can easily kill you on accident. Or on purpose. Unlike cars which usually have a reason to kill you horses can kill you if they just feel like not putting up with your shit anymore.
6. Not enough horses. Sure there are 33,000 wild horses, but these are WILD horses which makes them much almost certain to kill you unless you spend a lot of time breaking the horse. Even then you will still have 319,967,000 Americans without a horse.
7. Easier to keep a car. You don't have to feed a car 3 times a day. You don't have to groom your car daily. You don't have to spend quality time with your car. If your car gets a flat tire you put on a spare. If your horse breaks his leg you put the horse down.
8. Not enough vets to care for all the weird diseases we will give our horses.

That's oppressing horses and making them slaves.

Horse lives matter.

It's a nice idea, it just isn't a practical solution today. The population is too big, and spread out to far. Care for animals have sky rocketed too. Care for vehicles and bikes are less costly. The mighty buck in the end decides the most practical and acceptable solutions. But sometimes a crazy idea is the right one.
