I was reading an article on BBC last week where this American was running a business where he trained American and British English speakers to modify their speech so that foreigners could understand them. He mentioned that there was a big problem with the use of colloquialisms because these were not taught to ESL speakers overseas. He actually abdicated that it was the responsibility of the native English speakers to modify and simplify their speech patterns so that basic ESL speakers could understand. While I understand that in certain situations, this is beneficial, when you're in an educated environment, what's the harm in teaching others new phrases? I always enjoyed learning slang when I studied Spanish.
