Tokusatsu shows have gotten more and more popular internationally thanks to the internet so it only makes sense to have a discussion about them. The ones I watch are Garo, but nowadays that seems to be going more into an anime direction. I also like Power Rangers, but whether or not that counts is up for debate. I've never seen the original super sentai series save a couple episodes of Zyuranger and Gokaiger and I flat out haven't seen anything of Kamen Rider because, well it can be kind of daunting with its length. I've also tried getting into Ultraman several times but it kept boring me in spite of the elements of it I really liked.

Anyway, what are some of your favourite tokusatsu shows?

I've been an Ultraman fan since I first saw the original series as a kid. I've got the entire Kamen Rider V3 series, and it was pretty good, but I watched most of it back before I got into different streaming sites. I'm not sure I could find the time to watch it again. I'm a huge fan of the Garo series, and I've seen a decent amount of the Japanese Spider-Man series. I've watched most of Kikaida, I have to get back to that as well as Jumborg Ace. The thing is, I do enjoy toku, a lot, and whatever I'm watching "right now" tends to have my attention. They are all great to me.

Kikaida is about an android who was created by a scientist kidnapped by your standard, world conquering, evil organization. (seemed to be a lot of those in Japan back in the 70's ) He escapes the bad guys and then protects the scientists family, while looking for the scientist who has gone missing. It's considered one of the classic 70's super hero series. You can find it for sale (along with some other great series) here: http://www.generationkikaida.com/

Jumborg Ace is by the creators of Ultraman. It's about a pilot who is given a transforming robot (from a small aircraft to fighting form) to fight invading aliens. It has a the same basic flavor as the Ultraman series. Later in the series he gets a second robot (which transforms from a car)

i don't think i can pick just one series. i love Ultraman. Super Sentai. Kamen Rider. Garo. Metal Heroes. stuff like Kikaida and Japanese Spider Man too. if i had to pick a favorite from each franchise...

Ultraman Leo. i really love this series. and you can watch it here.
Space Sheriff Gavan. the first and best. and Kenji Ohba!
Kamen Rider V3. Kamen Rider W. (yeah, i picked one Showa and one Heisei)
Maskman. i really love the 80s Super Sentai. Liveman is great too. and Jetman of course.

Ultraman (the first one), Ultraseven, Ultraman Taro, Kamen Rider (Fujioka), Kamen Rider Black, Kamen Rider Black RX, and I have a soft spot for Uchu Keiji Shaider.

The only Heisei ones I liked are Ultraman Mebius and Ultraman Orb. There's something about Heisei Kamen Riders I don't like. I just can't stand them.

Really? I tried getting into Ultraman Orb and could not. I thought it moved really slowly and the fights didn't interest me much, I found X and Ginga to be way better.

Then again I have trouble getting into any Ultraman series. I'm not entirely sure why, but it's probably part because of how same-y a lot of the Ultramen feel.

Orb, and I'll be honest, all Heisei Tokusatsu series, are kind of a "let's see what they did this time" thing for me. I'm not as interested in them as I was years before. I saw Ginga (which I didn't like), I saw the first episode of X (which I never gave a chance). I just saw the second episode of Orb on Tsuburaya's official YouTube channel one day and thought "it wasn't as bad as I thought", and ended up following the show.

I do agree with the same-y bit. If you asked me why a new show is different or better than an old one, I won't be able to give you a detailed answer.

I think now they're doing some origin saga on Orb.. which I'm not interested in.

Never heard of Garo. But should I get in the mood to watch tokusatsu, I'll give it a look.

I'm really into Super Sentai and really enjoying Kamen Rider. I've tried Ultraman but I couldn't get into it. Maybe its the formula that I'm not used to although the special effects on Ultraman are woah

Garo is great, but keep in mind it is definitely for adults. its full of violence and even has demon boobies.
