Honestly? Death Note, it bears just the right amount of fantasy influence within it and has unpredictable pacing, also...it's very entertaining!

I'd start with erased.
My husband liked it. He loves action and suspense.
This isn't much of a mystery, but its great!!

I would suggest anything that is, at least, fairly down-to-earth, without wandering too much into the supernatural/sci-fi realm. Without knowing how interested she is in fantasy, it's hard to make recommendations along those lines. Some that you might consider, though:

Eden of the East
Honey and Clover
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Paranoia Agent
Orange
91 Days
Flowers of Evil

Make her cry a little (probably:)

Your Lie in April
The Dog of Flanders
(I'll recommend the film, but there is a 52 Ep. series, as well)
Terror in Resonance
Hotarubi no Mori e
Voices of a Distant Star
Wolf's Rain
The Garden of Words
A Silent Voice
5 Centimeters per Second
When Marnie was There

And here are some that are going to be pretty "on the edge" of what I previously stated:

Cowboy Bebop
Eureka Seven
Baccano!
Higurashi
Another
Serial Experiments Lain
The Empire of Corpses
Robotics;Notes
Switch
Mermaid Forest
Typhoon Noruda
A Lull in the Sea
.Hack//Liminality
(put this one here, because she'll have to move on to the other series--//Sign, at the least--too)

And, regardless of what her tastes are, there are a few that I would say everyone is going to watch at some point or another--they're movies anyhow so it's no long-term time eater:

Princess Mononoke
Howl's Moving Castle
Grave of the Fireflies
(Really, just have her watch every Studio Ghibli movie you can find; they're all pretty commendable)
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
Wolf Children
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Akira

Okay, so my mom is looking to get into anime. She loves drama, mystery and thrillers. Anyone have any suggestions?

I've moved this over to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum.

Regarding Potentsaliva's recommendation, it doesn't really seem to fit, and it's my gut feeling that it's not a serious recommendation.

She might like Psycho-Pass if it's okay to have sci-fi as part of the drama/mystery/thriller mix. (It qualifies on all counts I think).

The reactions!
IMHO, it is a solid drama... IF you can overcome the ecchi, asshole protagonist, and... and.. that ending which is, at the same time, satisfying and deeply disturbing. You also have to remain pretty much oblivious to the spin offs to not view it with extreme skepticism and due caution.

I also believe Black Butler would be a good starter.

If you're going to break her in gently so she would appreciate anime more in the future, you should go with Death Note. As an adult, I appreciated its lack of high school drama.

It's not on CR but Monster would be your best bet. Unfortunately I'm not sure were to watch this.

Erased is another good one. That's on CR.

Someone already mentioned Death Parade, which I think is an excellent starter.

But no FMA Brotherhood? Heck, I would probably recommend it to anyone who wants to dive into the world of anime.
